Explanation:
International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers was celebrated on May 29. This day was adopted by the UN General Assembly in its resolution 57/129. The theme for this year’ is “Protecting Civilians, Protecting Peace”. The theme of 2019 marks the upcoming 20th anniversary when for the first time the Security Council explicitly mandated a peacekeeping mission (UNAMSIL- United Nations Mission in Sierra Leone) to protect civilians.The day was first celebrated on May 29, 1948 to pay tribute to the 3700 uniformed and civil personnel who lost their lives upholding peace.
