 1. COVID-19 IN PAKISTAN

  • Pakistan reported 672 new cases and 8 deaths in the past 24 hours. Pakistan also conducted 28,887 tests in the span of 24 hours (P.S. this data was last updated on September 28 at 8:55am).

2.Political opposition leader arrested

What’s going on? The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) arrested Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President, and leader of the opposition, Shehbaz Sharif, on corruption charges. PML-N is one of the country’s main political opposition parties.

The details: Sharif was arrested after the Lahore High Court (LHC) rejected his bail application in a money laundering case. Sharif denied the charges against him. PML-N spokesperson, Marriyum Aurangzeb, alleged that Sharif’s arrest is the govt’s response to the recent All-Parties Conference (APC). During a press conference, Sharif’s niece, Maryam Nawaz, claimed that Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan’s govt has ulterior political motives. She also alleged that PM Khan is afraid of Sharif. Information Minister Shibli Faraz said the verdict against Sharif was not politically motivated.

Tell me more: Sharif isn’t the only political opposition leader facing corruption charges. On Monday, former President of Pakistan, and current Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Co-Chair, Asif Ali Zardari, was indicted in a money laundering case. Zardari’s sister, Faryal Talpur, was also indicted. Both siblings denied the charges against them.

The context: On September 20, opposition parties, including PML-N and PPP, organized the APC, which set the stage for their anti-govt movement (i.e. Pakistan Democratic Movement). The Pakistan Democratic Movement will involve public meetings, protests, and a long march towards Islamabad in January 2021. Opposition parties at the APC demanded PM Khan’s resignation, and a new election without any involvement from the armed forces or intelligence agencies (i.e. the opposition believes a rigged election brought PM Khan into power in 2018).

The bottom line: Opposition members and critics claim that the govt’s anti-corruption campaign is largely targeting PM Khan’s political opponents.

3.Victim-blaming in motorway rape case continues

Remember the CCPO in Lahore who was accused of victim-blaming the motorway rape survivor? Well, he’s not done. The Senate Human Rights panel called him in for a briefing on the case. During the meeting, the panel criticized CCPO Umar Sheikh for stating that the woman was traveling late at night without her husband’s permission. In the end, the panel said the state had to provide security to citizens regardless of what time they are traveling or their reasons for traveling.

  • Other case updates: One of the suspects has been arrested, while the primary suspect is still missing. During an earlier meeting, the Senate panel was told that a police team arrived at the scene in 6 minutes. However, Sheikh said the police arrived in 28 minutes. Plus, Sheikh kept calling the primary suspect Babar Malik, even though previous police and media reports have named Abid Ali as the main suspect. The Senate panel said conflicting statements are creating doubts about the investigation.
  • Backstory: Earlier this month, two robbers raped a woman at gunpoint on the motorway. She was traveling from Lahore to Gujranwala with her children. Her car ran out of fuel while she was crossing the toll plaza on the Lahore-Sialkot motorway. Sheikh suggested that her own actions got her into trouble. For example, he questioned why she left the house late at night, drove alone with her kids, didn’t check the petrol in her car, and didn’t take a route called GT road that is more populated.

MARKET RECAP

The benchmark KSE-100 index closed at 40,740.95 after dropping 960.28 points (-2.28%) as of September 28, 2020. The index nosedived after Sharif’s arrest (see Spotlight story above). The stock market apparently reacted to political tension in the country.
