2. Trans activist shot in Peshawar
What’s going on? Popular trans activist, Gul Panra, was reportedly shot six times in Peshawar. She died while being rushed to the hospital. Another trans woman, Chahat, was also injured.
The details: Armed men reportedly attacked them. However, details about who these men are remain unclear. Media reports haven’t named them, or explained their motive.
Tell me more: In a video statement, Farzana Jan, president of TransAction, commented on Panra’s death and claimed that several transgender people have been killed in the past. According to Jan, their murderers are still roaming freely. Jan called on the govt to protect Pakistan’s transgender community. TransAction is an organization that advocates for trans rights in the country. The organization confirmed Panra’s death on Facebook and wrote condolence messages. The hashtag #JusticeforGulPanra is trending on Twitter.
Looking ahead: Police are investigating the incident.
The bottom line: In 2009, Pakistan’s Supreme Court instructed all provincial govts to recognize the rights of transgender people. However, Pakistan’s transgender community still faces high levels of violence and discrimination.
3. When you forget to tell people you’re going on vacation
According to unverified reports from a small number of media outlets, former journalist and current Joint Director of the SECP, Sajid Gondal, wasn’t exactly kidnapped. Gondal reportedly told police he was on vacation with his friends in Pakistan’s northern areas. Gondal said he couldn’t contact his family because his cell phone was off. His family said he left to visit a dairy farm, but didn’t come home. Then, he disappeared for five days. We have so many questions. Why was his car found in front of the National Agricultural Research Center (NARC) in Chak Shahzad a day after he vanished? If there was an issue with his cell phone, why didn’t he find another phone to check in with his family? How did no one in his family know he was going on vacation?
4. Disney’s Mulan under fire
If you watched Disney’s live-action remake of Mulan, did you stick around for the end credits? The people who did, saw that Disney filmed scenes in China’s Xinjiang Province, where Chinese govt entities are accused of detaining and oppressing Uighur Muslims. The movie’s end credits revealed an official ‘thank you’ to problematic govt entities in Xinjiang. Activists accused Disney of working with departments that are committing human rights abuses against Muslims. A #BoycottMulan campaign is picking up steam on social media. Mulan is scheduled to roll out in Pakistan on Friday, September 11.
