1. COVID-19 IN PAKISTAN

  • Pakistan reported 441 new cases and 6 deaths in the past 24 hours. Pakistan also conducted 22,830 tests in the span of 24 hours (P.S. this data was last updated on September 10 at 8:39am).

2. Trans activist shot in Peshawar

What’s going on? Popular trans activist, Gul Panra, was reportedly shot six times in Peshawar. She died while being rushed to the hospital. Another trans woman, Chahat, was also injured.

The details: Armed men reportedly attacked them. However, details about who these men are remain unclear. Media reports haven’t named them, or explained their motive.

Tell me more: In a video statement, Farzana Jan, president of TransAction, commented on Panra’s death and claimed that several transgender people have been killed in the past. According to Jan, their murderers are still roaming freely. Jan called on the govt to protect Pakistan’s transgender community. TransAction is an organization that advocates for trans rights in the country. The organization confirmed Panra’s death on Facebook and wrote condolence messages. The hashtag #JusticeforGulPanra is trending on Twitter.

Looking ahead: Police are investigating the incident.

The bottom line: In 2009, Pakistan’s Supreme Court instructed all provincial govts to recognize the rights of transgender people. However, Pakistan’s transgender community still faces high levels of violence and discrimination.

3. When you forget to tell people you’re going on vacation

According to unverified reports from a small number of media outlets, former journalist and current Joint Director of the SECP, Sajid Gondal, wasn’t exactly kidnapped. Gondal reportedly told police he was on vacation with his friends in Pakistan’s northern areas. Gondal said he couldn’t contact his family because his cell phone was off. His family said he left to visit a dairy farm, but didn’t come home. Then, he disappeared for five days. We have so many questions. Why was his car found in front of the National Agricultural Research Center (NARC) in Chak Shahzad a day after he vanished? If there was an issue with his cell phone, why didn’t he find another phone to check in with his family? How did no one in his family know he was going on vacation?

  • Backstory: Gondal went missing from Islamabad last week on Thursday night. Gondal’s wife suspected that unidentified people kidnapped him. Shahzad Town police registered a kidnapping/ abduction case after his wife filed a complaint. Gondal announced his return on Twitter, saying he is “back and safe.”

4. Disney’s Mulan under fire

If you watched Disney’s live-action remake of Mulan, did you stick around for the end credits? The people who did, saw that Disney filmed scenes in China’s Xinjiang Province, where Chinese govt entities are accused of detaining and oppressing Uighur Muslims. The movie’s end credits revealed an official ‘thank you’ to problematic govt entities in Xinjiang. Activists accused Disney of working with departments that are committing human rights abuses against Muslims. A #BoycottMulan campaign is picking up steam on social media. Mulan is scheduled to roll out in Pakistan on Friday, September 11.

  • Tell me more about the end credits: Mulan’s credit sequence said ‘thank you’ to the publicity department of CPC Xinjiang Uighur Autonomy Region Committee, the Chinese Communist Party agency that manages state propaganda in the region. The end credits also said ‘thank you’ to the Bureau of Public Security in Turpan, a city where the govt is allegedly detaining around 1 million Uighur residents in extrajudicial internment camps.
  • Mulan is not new to controversy: Liu Yifei, the Chinese-American actress who plays Mulan, sparked backlash last summer after saying she supports Hong Kong’s police force. This is the same police force that cracked down on pro-democracy protestors.
  • Backstory: China is facing international scrutiny and criticism for its treatment of Muslim minorities in Xinjiang. Uighur Muslims are reportedly forced to adopt Han Chinese culture, work on production lines, and get abortions or sterilizations in order to slash birth rates in the Muslim population. China claims the detention camps or “re-education camps” are a security and economic development initiative.
