1. COVID-19 IN PAKISTAN

  • Pakistan reported 426 new cases and 9 deaths in the past 24 hours. Pakistan also conducted 23,521 tests in the span of 24 hours (P.S. this data was last updated on September 09 at 8:22am)

2. Pakistani Christian sentenced to death for alleged blasphemy

What’s going on? Asif Pervaiz, who has been in custody since 2013, was recently given the death penalty for allegedly sending blasphemous text messages (i.e. derogatory comments about Prophet Muhammad PBUH).

The details: A court in Lahore sentenced the 37-year-old Christian man to death. He was accused of sending blasphemous text messages to Muhammad Saeed Khokher, a former supervisor at work. Khokher is the complainant in the case. Pervaiz worked under Khokher at a hosiery factory. Pervaiz denied the blasphemy accusations against him, and said Khokher was trying to make him convert to Islam.

Tell me more: Khokher’s lawyer also spoke up to defend his client, and said other Christian employees at the factory haven’t accused Khokher of trying to convert them. Khokher also said ‘not true’ to Pervaiz’s allegations.

Looking ahead: The court rejected Pervaiz’s testimony. The court said Pervaiz will serve a three year prison term for misusing his phone to send the offensive text messages, and then be hanged. He was also fined PKR 50,000 (i.e. USD 300).

The context: According to Pakistan’s strict blasphemy laws, anyone who insults the Prophet gets the death penalty. There are also other punishments for people who insult Islam, the holy Quran, or certain holy people. As of now, 80 people in Pakistan are in prison for allegedly committing blasphemy.

The bottom line: Human Rights groups claim that people in Pakistan use blasphemy laws to settle personal rivalries against minorities, and even other Muslims. The blasphemy laws are known to disproportionately target minorities in the Muslim majority country.

3. Full steam ahead on Pakistan’s new ferry service

Pakistan is reportedly getting set to launch an international ferry service. The ferry is supposed to run from ports in Karachi and Gwadar to Iran, Iraq and the UAE. As of now, there is no international or national commercial ferry operating in Pakistan that transports passengers and goods.

4. Missing SECP official is back home

Former journalist and Joint Director of the SECP, Sajid Gondal, is back home after disappearing for five days. Gondal announced his return on Twitter, saying he is “back and safe.” According to police, Gondal was released near Rawat, a suburb in Islamabad. Details about the alleged kidnappers are still unclear. The Islamabad High Court’s (IHCs) Chief Justice, Athar Minallah, is worried about the rising number of enforced disappearances in the country’s federal capital.

  • Backstory: He went missing last week on Thursday night. He left his house at around 7:30pm, but didn’t return. His car was found at Chak Shahzad Town road near the National Agriculture Research Center (NARC). Gondal’s wife suspected that unidentified people kidnapped him. Shahzad Town police registered a kidnapping/abduction case after his wife filed a complaint.
