1. COVID-19 IN PAKISTAN

  • 24-hour count: Pakistan reported 3,270 new cases and 72 deaths in 24 hours. Pakistan also conducted 39,742 tests in the span of 24 hours (P.S. this data was last updated on March 23 at 8:27am).
  • More privately imported vaccines coming to Pakistan: A private company in Pakistan will begin receiving shipments of China’s CanSino Biologics COVID-19 vaccine. Pakistan has already received private imports of the Russian Sputnik vaccine. The first 10,000 doses of the CanSino vaccine are expected to arrive on March 25, 100,000 next month, and 200,000 the month after. The vaccine only requires one shot. It’s commercial name is Convidecia. The govt approved a price of PKR 4,225 ($27.15) per injection for Convidecia.

2. Who else was behind the recent Pak-India ceasefire?

What’s going on? Remember the ceasefire agreement between Pakistan and India last month? Apparently, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) brokered the ceasefire agreement. Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry didn’t comment on the UAE’s role in ceasefire talks. The Foreign Ministries of India and the UAE didn’t say much either. The UAE just issued a statement welcoming the ceasefire announcement.

Next steps: As a part of the ceasefire process, India and Pakistan are expected to:

  • Reinstate envoys in each other’s countries
  • Talk about resuming trade
  • The hardest part…reach a lasting resolution on Kashmir

The context: Last month, top officials in Pakistan and India agreed to observe a truce along the highly militarized Line of Control (LoC). The LoC runs between Pakistan-administered Kashmir and India-administered Kashmir. Pakistan and India frequently accused each other of violating a 2003 ceasefire agreement. This latest ceasefire is supposed to be a “renewed commitment.” Kashmir has been the root of most problems between Pakistan and India for 70+ years. Both countries claim Kashmir in full, but only control parts of it.

The bottom line: The UAE has trade and diplomatic connections with both Pakistan and India. It makes sense for the UAE to encourage peace between the two nuclear-armed neighbors.
