1. COVID-19 IN PAKISTAN

  • Pakistan reported 626 new cases and 14 deaths in the past 24 hours. Pakistan also conducted 19,221 tests in the span of 24 hours (P.S. this data was last updated on August 14, at 9:31am).

2. Religious minorities living in Pakistan

What’s going on? While celebrating Pakistan’s Independence Day, we must also reflect on the plight of religious minorities in the country. “You may belong to any religion, caste or creed, that has nothing to do with the business of the state,” said Pakistan’s founder, Muhammad Ali Jinnah. The white strip on Pakistan’s flag represents religious minorities and affirms unity between Muslims and other minorities. However, it seems as if Pakistan has strayed far from Jinnah’s vision and the flag’s symbolism.

Personal accounts: Pakistani blogger, Shehzeen Rehman (i.e. desiwonderwoman) and Instagram platform, Shanakht, started compiling personal stories of religious minorities living in Pakistan. The details are chilling. Minorities who shared their stories have been subjected to targeted killings, aggressive attitudes, and discrimination.

More recently: On Thursday, Meraj Ahmed, a 61-year old man from the minority Ahmadi community, was reportedly shot dead in Peshawar after receiving threats for a while. Ahmed and his brother initially approached the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to complain about an online hate campaign against them due to their Ahmadi faith.

The bottom line: Personal stories and news reports suggest that religious minority groups in Pakistan are living in an environment of fear and oppression.

3. Police arrest transgender activist

Islamabad police arrested trans-activist, Julie Khan. Julie is known for her social media video series titled, The Naked Truth. She often talks about problems the trans community faces, such as sexual abuse, harassment and poverty. The case details are kind of a hodge-podge, but we’ll do our best to break them down:

  • What happened? A group of people reportedly attacked Julie’s associate, Rosy. Julie, along with her friends Farah and Sumaira, filed a case against the people who assaulted Rosy.
  • More reports: Julie’s lawyer, Barrister Hassan Niazi, retweeted a post that seems to explain the case. Julie’s friend reportedly filed an attempted murder case against a big-wig in the transgender community named Guru Najma. Then, Najma registered a First Information Report (FIR) after getting bail. According to another post Niazi retweeted, a trans woman named Lubna accused Julie of attacking her. According to Farah, the group behind Rosy’s beating retaliated and registered a case against the three of them.
  • False charges? On August 10, police reportedly barged into Julie’s home, manhandled her, and arrested her. Niazi alleged that Julie was sent to adiala jail on false charges. According to Niazi, Islamabad police admitted that the FIR against Julie was a pressure tactic meant to silence her. Niazi believes a mafia group coerced the police into arresting her.
