1. COVID-19 IN PAKISTAN

  • 24-hour recap: Pakistan reported 1,656 cases and 35 deaths in 24 hours. Pakistan also conducted 50,779 tests in the span of 24 hours (P.S. this data was last updated on October 3 at 9:09am).

2. Around 700 Pakistanis named in “Pandora Papers”

What’s going on? In a new investigation titled, “Pandora Papers,” the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) did a deep dive into the offshore holdings of multinational corporations and wealthy individuals around the world. The probe is based on more than 11.9 million confidential files from 14 offshore services firms. The Pandora Papers report is out in the open now, and there are up to 700 Pakistanis named in it.

Go on: The ICIJ said it delved into a “shadowy” financial system that allows multinational corporations and the rich to “avoid taxes” and “shield their wealth.” There is a complex and blurry line between using tax havens (i.e. jurisdictions with low taxes and no residency requirements) legally or illegally. For instance, companies and wealthy individuals can legally stash money they have earned abroad in tax havens to avoid higher taxes in other countries as long as they pay required taxes at home. However, tax havens enter illegal territory when they are used to straight-up hide money from tax authorities at home.
