1. COVID-19 IN PAKISTAN

24-hour recap: Pakistan reported 1,037 cases and 40 deaths in 24 hours. Pakistan also conducted 46,145 tests in the span of 24 hours (P.S. this data was last updated on July 1 at 7:58 am).

2. PM Khan said Pakistan “accepts” China’s “version” of the Uyghur issue

What’s going on? China’s treatment of Uyghur Muslims came up while Prime Minister Imran Khan was speaking to Chinese journalists.

Reminder: When the Uyghur subject came up in the past, you may have noticed that Pakistani officials like National Security Advisor Moeed Yusuf, Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, and PM Khan himself have stuck to the same talking points along the lines of: ‘Pakistan has a special relationship with China…Pakistan and China are great friends…if we have an issue with China, we don’t talk about it in public, we speak behind closed doors and have our own way of communicating with each other.’ However this time, it looks like PM Khan went a step further.

The details: PM Khan reportedly said Pakistan “accepted” China’s version of the story regarding its treatment of Uyghur Muslims. “Because of our extreme proximity and relationship with China, we actually accept the Chinese version,” he said.

Tell me more: Then, PM Khan pointed out India’s alleged human rights violations in Kashmir, saying people should pay attention to that as well. Qureshi and Yusuf have used the same ‘if we’re talking about human rights, look at what India is doing in Kashmir’ talking point when asked about Uyghurs in China.
