2. The Taliban promise no retaliation against Afghans or the use of Afghan soil against Pakistan

What’s going on? The Taliban said they won’t let Afghans evacuate anymore. The militant group also warned that the US better stick to its withdrawal deadline as promised. US President Joe Biden said he wouldn’t change his August 31 deadline to pull out troops from Afghanistan, as long as the Taliban don’t disrupt evacuation operations or airport access. Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid said foreign nationals could continue traveling to the airport, but Afghans should return home.

The details: Mujahid added that Afghans, such as doctors and academics, shouldn’t go to other countries since Afghanistan needs their expertise. According to CNN, many of those fleeing Afghanistan ever since the Taliban took over are educated people, especially women. When the Taliban ruled Afghanistan from 1996-2001, they imposed a strict interpretation of Islamic law and didn’t let women work or attend school.
