1. COVID-19 IN PAKISTAN

24-hour recap: Pakistan reported 1,038 cases and 46 deaths in 24 hours. Pakistan also conducted 42,113 tests in the span of 24 hours (P.S. this data was last updated on June 16 at 9:09 am).

Vaccine shortage at Karachi’s Expo Centre causes brief disruption: shortage of COVID-19 vaccines at Karachi’s Expo Centre — a mega vaccination centre and the largest in the country — forced many people to return home without their expected jab. The shortage put a strain on other vaccination centres in the city as well since they had to direct their vaccine supplies to Karachi’s Expo Centre. According to Dr. Samreen Qureshi, Sindh’s focal person for COVID-19 vaccinations, the shortage was only temporary and due to an increase in demand for vaccines, which she took as a positive sign. Sindh is currently administering more than 75,000 vaccine doses daily, she said.

  • In related news: On Wednesday, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Health Dr. Faisal Sultan addressed the temporary vaccine shortage at some vaccination centres across the country. He said the situation is expected to get better by June 20. According to him, there are over 2,000 vaccination centres in the country, some of which receive more visitors and therefore face a slight shortage. Sultan said there are more than 2 million vaccine doses currently available in Pakistan.

2. Supreme Court orders demolition of Aladin Shopping Mall, Pavilion End Club and Nasla Tower

What’s going on? On Monday June 14 the Supreme Court ordered authorities to immediately demolish Pavilion End Club (a recreational club) and end all commercial activities at the Aladin Amusement Park in Karachi. Pavilion End Club is adjacent to Aladin Amusement Park.

The details: According to Chief Justice Gulzar Ahmed, it’s not okay to conduct commercial activities on land allotted to parks. He also said “the land was unlawfully converted into a commercial area.” The Aladin shopping mall near the amusement park and Pavilion End Club are being demolished on the grounds that they were built illegally.

Tell me more: Clashes erupted between protestors (shop owners) and the police on Wednesday when authorities began to bulldoze the mall. That same day, the Supreme Court also gave a ruling to demolish Nasla Tower, a residential building on Karachi’s Shahra-e- Quaideen road, declaring it illegal. An apartment in Nasla Tower reportedly costs Rs. 30 million, according to Samaa Digital

The context: If you’re getting a feeling of deja vu, that’s because we wrote about a similar story in yesterday’s newsletter. This week, the Supreme Court also gave the go-ahead to demolish houses along the Gujjar and Orangi nullahs (i.e. stormwater drains), which could displace 50,000 residents.

Looking ahead: The management at Aladin Amusement Park and Pavilion End Club asked the Supreme Court to review its decision. While the court’s decision to demolish homes along the Gujjar and Orangi nullahs will displace thousands of working-class residents, the demolition of Pavilion End Club could leave more than 600 employees out of work.

The bottom line: The Supreme Court is cracking down on what it claims are “illegal structures and construction.”
