1. COVID-19 IN PAKISTAN

2. Punjab Textbook Board confiscates 7th-grade social studies books: On Monday, the Punjab Curriculum Textbook Board (PCTB) reportedly confiscated the social studies books for 7th grade, which were published by Oxford University Press. The books printed a picture of Pakistani education advocate and Nobel Laureate, Malala Yousafzai, alongside a picture of Maj Aziz Bhatti Shaheed who is considered a 1965 war hero.

3. Military personnel are getting a salary raise: The federal cabinet approved a 15% increase in the salaries of military personnel. This is after an earlier 10% raise. In total, military personnel received a 25% salary raise. Rangers and Frontier Corps personnel won’t get special allowances for now but the Prime Minister wants to discuss this at some point – their salaries will eventually increase as well. During a press conference after the cabinet meeting, Minister for Information Fawad Chaudhry claimed the salaries of armed forces hadn’t increased for the last two years, while civil employees did get salary bumps.

  • Backstory: Earlier in June this year, Pakistan’s total defense budget for 2021 went up by 6.2%, and the government proposed allocating a whopping Rs. 1.37 trillion for defense services.
