2. Justice Ayesha Malik set to become the first woman Supreme Court Judge in Pakistan

What’s going on? The Judicial Commission is reportedly going to appoint Lahore High Court Justice (LHC), Ayesha Malik, to the Supreme Court of Pakistan. According to Samaa.tv, Chief Justice Gulzar Ahmed has nominated her. A Judicial Commission will meet on September 9 to officially announce the decision. Justice Malik is expected to replace Justice Mushir Alam who is retiring on August 17. Once Justice Malik is appointed, she will be the first woman judge on the Supreme Court in Pakistan’s 74-year history.

Who is she? Justice Malik has been an LHC judge since March 2012. She reportedly ranks number four on the seniority list of LHC judges. She completed her basic education from schools in Paris, New York, and Karachi. She received her B.Com from the Government College of Commerce and Economics in Karachi and studied law at Pakistan College of Law, Lahore. She went on to do her LLM from Harvard Law School, where she was named a London H. Gammon Fellow 1998-1999 for outstanding merit.
