1. COVID-19 IN PAKISTAN

  • 24-hour recap: Pakistan reported 1,980 cases and 27 deaths in 24 hours. Pakistan also conducted 48,382 tests in the span of 24 hours (P.S. this data was last updated on July 11 at 12:41 am).
  • Pakistan’s COVID-19 positivity rate now four percent, first time since May 30: The positivity rate in Pakistan currently stands at four percent as the country recorded 1,980 new cases in the last 24 hours. 55 percent of those cases were detected in Sindh. This is the first time since May 30 that the country has had a four percent positivity rate.
  • Rawalpindi administration considering lockdown amid a surge in COVID cases: As COVID-19 cases surge in Pakistan, the Rawalpindi administration is considering “smart lockdowns” in “hotspots” where five more cases of the Delta variant have surfaced. The administration is planning to conduct contact tracing for patients who have tested positive for COVID-19, according to Deputy Commissioner Aamir Aqiq Khan. Plans are underway for patients diagnosed with the Delta variant to be isolated in their houses for two weeks with health facilities provided in their homes. Khan also said people visiting restaurants and shopping malls will need to get their vaccination certificates checked. Additionally, a heavy fine will be imposed on whoever violates standard operating procedures.

Abducted 13-year-old rescued from her wedding ceremony in Balochistan: Police on Saturday rescued a 13-year-old orphan from her wedding ceremony in Balochistan, 20 days after she had been abducted from Hyderabad while on her way to school. A police party raided the house of Mashooq Ali in Muhabat Shaikh Village where a wedding ceremony for him and the teenager was underway. Ali, his father, and two witnesses, including the Nikkah Khawan, were arrested on charges of abducting and forcing the girl to marry the older man. Following the arrest, both Ali and the minor were handed over to the Hyderabad Police.

3. Model found dead at her house in Lahore, suspects still unknown: 29-year-old Nayab Nadeem was found dead in her house in Lahore’s Defence Housing Authority under “mysterious circumstances” according to police. They suspect she was strangulated to death but are awaiting her post-mortem report to ascertain the facts. The case was registered by Nadeem’s stepbrother who found her dead on the floor unclothed, adding that he noticed the net of her bathroom was broken. The suspects behind her death are still unknown. Nadeem was a model by profession and lived alone in her house.
