2. Say hello to Pakistan’s new province
What’s going on? Have you ever wondered what GB’s ‘provincial status’ is? It’s kinda-sorta a province, but not really. It’s more of a semi-province. That may change soon.
The details: The federal govt is reportedly planning to make GB a full-fledged province, complete with all the constitutional rights, and representation in both houses of parliament (i.e. the Senate and National Assembly). The govt will reportedly take steps to improve health, tourism, transport, and education facilities. The Minister of Kashmir and GB Affairs, Ali Amin Gandapur, said Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan, will visit the region soon and make a formal announcement. This move would make GB Pakistan’s 5th province.
The context: In 1970, Pakistan made the territory of GB a separate administrative unit and called it ‘Northern Areas.’ In 2009, then President, Asif Ali Zardari, signed a Self-Governance Order, which granted the territory limited autonomy and renamed it GB. GB has some of the world’s highest mountains and glaciers.
The bottom line: India might have a problem with Pakistan giving GB full-province status, because it’s disputed territory. GB is a part of the greater Kashmir region, and shares a border with both Pakistan-controlled Kashmir (i.e. Azad Kashmir) and India-controlled Kashmir (i.e. Jammu and Kashmir). India claims GB is a part of Jammu and Kashmir.
