2. British Airways will start direct flights to Lahore
Last summer, London-based British Airways (i.e. the UK’s flag carrier airline), resumed flights to Pakistan after more than a decade (P.S. the airline suspended flights to Pakistan in 2008 after the Marriott Hotel Bombing in Islamabad). The airline already flies to Islamabad. Yesterday, British Airways announced it will begin flying directly from Lahore to London Heathrow four days a week, starting on October 14. These are reportedly the first ever British Airways flights to Lahore. The new services will reportedly offer smooth transfer options to Manchester, the US and Canada as well. British High Commissioner to Pakistan, Dr. Christian Turner, hopes the Lahore-London route will open up more opportunities for business links, people-to-people ties, and tourism. Tickets are on sale now.
3. The first female head of South Waziristan’s education department
Noor Khadija recently became the first woman to be appointed as head of the Education Department in South Waziristan, located in Pakistan’s Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province. This area reportedly has the lowest female literacy rate in the country. Khadija has a masters degree in education, and has been associated with the education department for 10 years. She was appointed Deputy District Education officer on August 31. She plans to serve her community, and help girls pursue their education. Life will reportedly also be easier for women teachers who can easily communicate their problems to her. We are rooting for Khadija to improve girls’ education in South Waziristan.
