2. Woman journalist shot dead in Balochistan
What’s going on? State-owned Pakistan Television (PTV) talk show host, Shaheena Shaheen, was shot at her home in Turbat, Balochistan. She was also the editor of a local magazine. Two men reportedly dropped Shaheen off at the hospital in critical condition. The men left while the doctors tried to save her.
The details: Shaheen’s family suspects her husband is behind the murder. She reportedly had a court marriage six months ago and was living with her husband. According to lawyer, women’s rights activist, and founder of Digital Rights Foundation, Nighat Dad, Shaheen is the second woman journalist to be killed in Pakistan within the last 10 months. Police are carrying out raids to find and arrest Shaheen’s husband.
The bottom line: Pakistan is considered to be a dangerous country for journalists. Reporters Without Borders ranked Pakistan 145th out of 180 countries in its 2020 World Press Freedom Index. According to the Committee to Protect Journalists, at least 61 Pakistani journalists have been killed in connection with their work since 1992.
3. Rape and murder of minor girl in Karachi
Five-year-old Marwah was reportedly kidnapped and raped before being murdered. She was reported missing from Karachi’s old Sabzi Mandi area. Two days later, her torched body was found in a heap of trash on an empty plot in the same area. According to an autopsy report, she had been sexually assaulted and died from head injuries. One suspect has been taken into custody for interrogation. Residents in the area staged a protest on Main University Road after she was buried. Protesters demanded #justiceforMarwah.
4. A hefty financial package for Karachi’s transformation
Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan announced a PKR 1.1 trillion financial package to transform Karachi’s municipal and infrastructure issues. PM Khan said both the federal govt and provincial Sindh govt will contribute to Karachi’s financial package. According to Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairman, Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, the federal govt is pitching in PKR 300 billion, while the Sindh govt is contributing more than PKR 800 billion. He thinks the allocation is a “good start.”
- The transformation plan will tackle: The water supply, encroachments on nullahs (i.e. the Sindh govt will reportedly resettle displaced people elsewhere), the sewerage system, solid waste disposal, and roads/transportation. The plan will bring implementation under one provincial coordination committee for the sake of staying organized and making sure implementation efforts aren’t scattered. The committee will basically bring various stakeholders together so they can operate from one platform.
- Backstory: Record-breaking monsoon rains in Karachi drew national attention to the city’s weak drainage and sewerage system. Heavy rain accumulated on streets, damaged infrastructure, caused long-lasting power outages, and killed at least a dozen people.
