2. Fatal blast at a religious school in Peshawar
What’s going on? At least eight people were killed, and more than 110 injured, during an explosion yesterday morning at the Jamia Zuberia madrasa (i.e. Islamic school) in Peshawar’s Dir Colony. The blast took place during a class with Sheikh Rahimuddin Haqqani, a senior cleric and instructor. Four of the deceased victims were reportedly students between the ages of 20 to 25. A state of emergency was declared for Peshawar’s hospitals, so they could prepare for a stream of wounded patients.
The details: The madrasa is located in an area where a lot of Afghans live. Most of the madrasa’s students are in their early to mid-20s. Some students told authorities that an unidentified man brought a bag inside earlier on and left. Police officials suspect the bag contained an improvised-explosive device (I.E.D). Around 11 lbs of explosives were used in the attack.
Tell me more: Political leaders in the federal govt and opposition parties condemned the attack. Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan said ‘we will make sure the terrorists are brought to justice.’ UNICEF reported that some children were also injured.
The bottom line: No group has claimed responsibility for the attack yet. The Pakistan Taliban already said ‘we didn’t do it.’ Peshawar, which is near the border with Afghanistan, has a history of militant violence. Schools in Peshawar have been attacked in the past as well. On December 16, 2014, gunmen linked to the Pakistan Taliban stormed the Army Public School (APS) in Peshawar and killed 150 people, most of them children.
3. Rising wheat and sugar imports
Pakistan is reportedly becoming a major importer of agricultural goods. Pakistan was actually exporting products like wheat and sugar until fiscal year (FY) 2020. According to VP of the Sindh Abadgar Board (SAB), Syed Mahmood Nawaz Shah, Pakistan’s wheat output dropped 15-20% in FY 2020, probably due to climate change. However, Shah thinks other factors could have impacted wheat output as well. He said the govt didn’t think it was any cause for alarm, since wheat production seemed to be meeting local demand. Now, the govt is apparently relying on imports to control high food prices in the country. However, this strategy is also fueling a trade deficit.
4. Minor boy allegedly raped and killed in Balochistan
The body of an eight-year-old boy was found in Balochistan’s Kalat district on Tuesday. The boy was allegedly raped and tortured before being killed. He had gone to a madrasa near his home on Monday, and went missing at around 4:30pm. His family reported that he was missing, and looked for him with police all night. The police found his body on a hill at 9am on Tuesday. A police surgeon confirmed that the child was raped by more than one person.
5. South Africa’s cricket team might touch down in Pakistan
Cricket South Africa announced it will send a security assessment delegation to Pakistan this weekend. There are apparently plans to organize a cricket tour in Pakistan sometime in 2021. South Africa’s cricket team has been steering clear of playing in Pakistan due to security concerns. If all goes well and the tour comes through, this could be the South Africa cricket team’s first visit to Pakistan since 2007/08.
