1. COVID-19 IN PAKISTAN

  • Pakistan reported 583 new cases and 9 deaths in the past 24 hours. Pakistan also conducted 31,168 tests in the span of 24 hours (P.S. this data was last updated on October 8 at 8:24am).

2. Zee5 removes Churails for viewers in Pakistan

The web series, Churails, cannot be viewed in Pakistan anymore. Indian video on-demand service, Zee5, launched the series earlier this year. Now, viewers accessing Zee5 from Pakistan can’t watch the show. The show’s director, Asim Abbasi, wrote that Churails can’t be viewed in its own country of origin, even though it received international acclaim. According to Abbasi, artistic freedom is being squashed because some people wrongly perceive it as a moral threat. Abbasi said this is a loss for women and marginalized communities, and a home-run for misogynists. It’s unclear what exactly critics found problematic. A few comments on Twitter suggest that vulgar language struck a nerve. Other Twitter comments claim the content was too bold for Pakistan. For example, the women in the show were seen drinking and smoking.

3. The Balochistan Assembly’s new daycare facility

Balochistan’s Assembly just became the first provincial assembly in Pakistan to have a daycare facility. On June 13, 2019, Balochistan’s Chief Minister, Jam Kamal Khan, approved the construction of a daycare center in Balochistan’s Assembly. The facility inside the building  includes a nursing corner and feeding room. Balochistan’s Assembly will hopefully set the stage for other provincial assemblies to arrange child care facilities. This way, women parliamentarians who are mothers can focus on their work without worrying about a lack of child care options.

  • Backstory: In 2018, Mahjabeen Sheran was elected to the parliament in Balochistan. On April 29, 2019, the family member who usually watches her 8-month-old son wasn’t available. Sheran didn’t want to miss the session, so she brought her baby along. At first, she left her son with a staff member in another room. However, her son was getting a bit cranky, so she brought him into the assembly session. The secretary of the assembly said children aren’t allowed in the session, so she eventually had to leave. Afterwards, Sheran highlighted the need for gender friendly workplaces in Pakistan, and asked for a daycare center numerous times.
