1. COVID-19 IN PAKISTAN
2. Former PM charged for conspiring against the state
What’s going on? A citizen named Badar Rashid reportedly registered a First Information Report (FIR) against former PM and current Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Supremo, Nawaz Sharif. In the FIR, Rashid accused Sharif of conspiring against the country and state institutions.
The details: The FIR also names other PML-N party leaders, like Sharif’s daughter, Maryam Nawaz. Overall, the FIR is accusing these PML-N people of being traitors. The charges in the FIR are specifically “cyberterrorism,” “definition of criminal conspiracy,” “a conspiracy to wage war against Pakistan,” “condemning the creation of the country/advocating the abolishment of its sovereignty,” and “promoting enmity between different groups.” Rashid is particularly concerned about Sharif’s speeches on September 20 and October 1.
Tell me more: Both of Sharif’s speeches were lengthy, but long story short, he accused PM Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) govt of failing to control inflation and poverty. He also said the political opposition is not against PM Khan, but against ‘those who imposed such an incapable person on the country through a rigged election’ (i.e. he’s suggesting the armed forces brought PM Khan into power).
PML-N’s response: PML-N leaders condemned the registered case, and accused the ruling PTI govt of trying to silence the opposition. PML-N spokesperson Marriyum Aurangzeb (who was also named in the FIR), thinks the govt is panicking. In other words, PML-N thinks govt officials worked through Rashid to register the FIR.
The govt’s response: Science and Tech Minister, Fawad Chaudhry, said PM Khan is not happy about the FIR. Chaudhry also said PM Khan didn’t even know about the FIR.
The bottom line: A citizen registered a sedition case against members of the political opposition. The govt is saying they had nothing to do with it. It sounds like someone needs to look into this FIR.
3. Ahmadi professor shot dead in Peshawar
Professor Dr. Naeemuddin Khattak, who is a part of the Ahmadi community, was reportedly shot dead in a targeted attack. The 57-year-old professor was a faculty member at the Government Superior Science College in Peshawar. Bhana Mari police registered an FIR following a complaint from Dr. Khattak’s brother. According to the FIR, Dr. Khattak was driving his car when two men on a motorcycle stopped the car and started firing. His brother pointed to a lecturer at the University of Agriculture, Peshawar and another man as potential suspects. The FIR states that Dr. Khattak and the lecturer argued about a religious issue a day ago. Saleemuddin, who is a spokesperson for the Ahmadi organization, Jamaat-i-Ahmadiyya Pakistan, claimed that Dr. Khattak was killed because of his faith.
