1. COVID-19 IN PAKISTAN
2. Pakistan shares evidence against India with the UN
What’s going on? Remember when Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, and military spokesman, Major General Babar Iftikhar alleged that India sponsors terrorism against Pakistan? Qureshi said Pakistan will present a dossier of evidence to the UN and other international bodies, proving that India is involved with militant organizations in Pakistan. Pakistan just handed that dossier to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
The details: The dossier allegedly reveals that India funded militant organizations like the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), and Baloch armed separatist groups. The dossier apparently gets into specifics, like the names of alleged Indian intelligence agents, dates of alleged meetings, audio clips of intercepted phone calls, and documentation of bank transfers.
Tell me more: India’s permanent representative to the UN commented on Pakistan’s dossier and said ‘liar liar.’
Tit-for-tat: India also submitted a dossier to UN Security Council (UNSC) members, which accused Pakistan of supporting terrorism. India said four members of the Pakistan-based militant group, Jaish-e-Muhammad, recently attempted a major attack in India-controlled Kashmir. The militants reportedly infiltrated the disputed region through a tunnel, and started firing when security forces stopped their truck for a routine inspection. India claimed that Pakistan was behind the attack. Pakistan told India to stop its “false terrorism narrative.”
Something to know: Back in June, India was elected as a non-permanent member of the UNSC for a two-year term starting on January 1, 2021. This is the eighth time India has been elected as a non-permanent member. The 15-member UNSC is responsible for maintaining international peace and security. The UNSC has five permanent members, and 10 non-permanent members. The permanent members are China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The UN General Assembly elects non-permanent members for a term of two years. Permanent members of the UNSC have the right to veto.
The bottom line: Pakistan and India often hurl terrorism allegations at each other. However, this time, Pakistan claims to have detailed proof.
3. UAE stops issuing visas to citizens of Pakistan
Pakistan isn’t alone here. The UAE temporarily stopped issuing new employment and visit visa applications to citizens of Pakistan and 12 other countries, including Afghanistan, Libya, Yemen, Iran, Iraq, Syria, Algeria, Kenya, Lebanon, Tunisia, Somalia, and Turkey. But why? Apparently for security reasons. It’s unclear what these security concerns are. At first, Pakistan’s Foreign Office thought the visa suspension was due to COVID-19. The Foreign Office said people who currently have visas can still enter the UAE.
4. Who’s having a farewell party?
Kaavan the elephant. Known as Pakistan’s “lonely elephant,” Kaavan is being flown to a wildlife sanctuary in Cambodia. The Islamabad Zoo was decorated with balloons and banners for an actual farewell party. Animal rights activists, including American pop star Cher, have been campaigning to get him out of the zoo. Zoo keepers allegedly kept Kaavan in chains and didn’t shelter him properly.
5. Woman police officer makes history
Pari Gul Tareen is reportedly the first woman to join Balochistan’s police force as an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP). Tareen passed the Central Superior Services (CSS) exam in 2017 and joined the Police Service of Pakistan (PSP) afterwards. She will work as ASP in Quetta’s Cantt area. Tareen herself is from Balochistan’s Pishin District. In an interview, she talked about how the police uniform inspired her to protect and serve. She also gave her husband a special shout out for being supportive.
