1. COVID-19 IN PAKISTAN

  • Pakistan reported 2,304 cases and 37 deaths in the past 24 hours. Pakistan also conducted 36,923 tests in the span of 24 hours (P.S. this data was last updated on November 13 at 7:00am).

2. Islamic State behind Jeddah cemetery attack

What’s going on? Remember the explosion at a cemetery in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia? The blast took place during an international World War I (WWI) commemoration ceremony. Representatives and foreign diplomats from several countries attended the event, which was held at a non-Muslim cemetery. Pakistan is amongst some of the countries that condemned the attack.

The details: Someone finally said ‘I did it.’ The Islamic State militant group claimed responsibility for the attack, which wounded several people. The militant organization didn’t give any proof to back up its claim, but did report that its soldiers hid a homemade bomb in the cemetery on Wednesday.

Tell me more: They were reportedly trying to target the French consul general who was at the ceremony. The attack was their way of protesting against France’s resolve to publish cartoons depicting the Prophet Mohammad (PBUH).

The context: The Islamic State is likely referring to a statement French President Emmanuel Macron made a few weeks ago. He said France would not “give up” the caricatures during a memorial service for history teacher, Samuel Paty. Paty was beheaded in a Paris suburb on October 16 after showing the same caricatures to his students during a discussion about the limits of free speech. The suspected assailant was an 18-year-old Russian national of Chechen origin.

The bottom line: Muslims around the world have been protesting against France, claiming that its govt is defending the right to publish the controversial cartoons.

3. Cleric who officiated Arzoo Raja’s marriage gets bail

Qazi Abdul Rasool, the cleric who reportedly officiated Arzoo Raja’s marriage, has received pre-arrest bail until November 16. Raja is a 13 or 14 year old Christian girl who was allegedly abducted, forcibly married, and forcibly converted to Islam. In his bail application, Rasool denied being involved in anything illegal. According to Rasool, Raja and her purported 44-year-old Muslim husband came to him on October 13 to contract a marriage. He claimed that Raja produced a verified affidavit, which said she was a teenager getting married willingly. Rasool also said Raja had a certificate confirming she “embraced” Islam. Rasool is arguing that any potential arrest will be based on a false case against him.

  • Backstory: Raja’s parents reported their daughter had gone missing from their home in Karachi. Police said she married Azhar, and “willingly” converted to Islam. According to the Sindh Child Marriage Restraint Act, the minimum age of marriage is 18. Raja’s case is currently underway in the Sindh High Court (SHC). However, the SHC already acknowledged that she’s a minor after asking a medical board to confirm her age.

4. Assault in Kashmore, Sindh

Prime suspect, Rafiq Malak, was arrested for allegedly raping a woman and her minor daughter. Police haven’t caught his accomplices yet. The woman came across Malak at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Center (JPMC) in Karachi. He promised to get her a job at Kashmore Toll Plaza. After the woman met Malak at his residence to follow up on the job, she claimed that he raped her, and then gave her to another man who also raped her. The woman also said Malak held her five-year-old daughter hostage, and would only let her child go in exchange for another woman. The young daughter told police she was “criminally assaulted.” Malak reportedly confessed that he raped the woman and her daughter.

  • Conflicting reports: There are conflicting reports about how Malak was captured, and how many other suspects are still on the loose. According to Dawn, Kashmore police found a way to lure the suspect to them by using the assistant sub-inspector’s (ASI) wife as a decoy. The ASI’s wife talked to Malak on the phone. Then the ASI’s daughter apparently got involved, and met Malak at a park where the police were waiting. However, The Express Tribune reported that police raided Malak’s residence where they found three people, and two escaped.

5. Peshawar High Court Chief Justice dies of COVID-19

Peshawar High Court (PHC) Chief Justice, Waqar Seth, passed away after contracting COVID-19. The 59-year-old tested positive for the virus on October 22. Political leaders and army officials shared their condolences on social media.

  • Backstory: Does Justice Seth’s name ring a bell? In 2019, he led a special court in Islamabad, which ruled that former President and retired General, Pervez Musharraf, was guilty of committing high treason. The special court sentenced Musharraf to death in the treason case. Musharraf was accused of treason for suspending the constitution when he imposed a state of emergency in November 2007. Justice Seth wrote this graphic paragraph in the judgement against Musharraf. Law Minister Farogh Naseem accused Justice Seth of violating judicial conduct. Legal experts also claimed Justice Seth’s instructions were unconstitutional:
