1. COVID-19 IN PAKISTAN
- Pakistan reported 1,637 new cases and 23 deaths in the past 24 hours. Pakistan also conducted 31,904 tests in the span of 24 hours (P.S. this data was last updated on November 10 at 7:54am).
- Based on findings from a Phase 3 clinical trial, BioNTech and Pfizer claimed their experimental
vaccine is more than 90% effective at protecting people from COVID-19. The next step is to get emergency use authorization from the US Food and Drug Administration. The US govt didn’t give BioNTech and Pfizer funding to support their vaccine development program. However, they have a deal with the US govt to supply at least 100 million doses for $1.95 billion, with plans to produce 50 million doses in 2020 (P.S. 50 million vaccine doses amounts to 25 million vaccines, since the vaccine consists of a two-dose schedule). Pfizer and BioNTech expect to produce up to 1.3 billion doses in 2021.
2. Media group’s editor-in-chief granted bail
What’s going on? Pakistan’s Supreme Court granted bail to Mir Shakeel-ur-Rehman, the Editor-in-Chief of Jang Group, one of Pakistan’s largest media groups. Rehman will be released after spending more than 200 days in detention.
The details: Jang media group, which includes the Geo TV network, has often criticized Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan’s govt, and the country’s military. The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) accused Rehman of illegally acquiring plots of land in Lahore 34 years ago, and arrested him in March 2020.
Tell me more: Rehman’s legal counsel, Amjad Pervaiz, called the charges against his client “trumped up.” Pervaiz also doesn’t get why: 1) the same reference was filed against four people, but Rehman was the only one detained, and 2) Rehman was taken into custody during the inquiry stage. Reporters Without Borders (RSF) claimed Rehman was being held on fake charges, and urged Pakistan’s Supreme Court to order his release.
The context: In March 2020, Jang Group issued a statement following Rehman’s arrest. It denied the charges against Rehman, and claimed that NAB had been sending notices and threats to shutdown the channel due to its investigative reporting about the accountability bureau. While writing to Jang Group, NAB allegedly referred to itself as “a constitutionally protected institution that can’t be criticized.”
The bottom line: Pakistan has been ranked among the world’s most dangerous countries for media workers. Journalists and bloggers have complained about kidnappings, beatings, and even killings. Opposition parties have also accused PM Khan’s govt of using NAB for political purposes. NAB continues to deny these allegations, claiming it pursues cases independently, without any orders from the govt.
3. Case against opposition party leader reportedly false
Remember when retired Captain Muhammad
- Backstory: In October, Sindh’s Chief Minister claimed that lawmakers from the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) govt unlawfully pressured the Sindh police into filing a case against Safdar. Waqas Ahmed Khan, who filed the First Information Report (FIR) report, is reportedly the nephew of a PTI leader. In the FIR, Khan said he tried to intervene while Safdar chanted slogans at the mausoleum. Khan also alleged that Safdar damaged property and threatened him. However, it turns out that Khan wasn’t even at the mausoleum, so there isn’t enough evidence to prove his allegations.
4. Medical board reveals Arzoo Raja is underage
During a hearing last week, the Sindh High Court (SHC) ordered a medical board to figure out Arzoo Raja’s real age. Raja is a Christian girl who was allegedly abducted, forcibly married, and forcibly converted to Islam. Her parents and a National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) record claim she is 13-years-old. Her new 44-year old Muslim husband, Ali Azhar, shared a marriage certificate that shows she’s 18-years-old. A medical board recently told the SHC that Raja is around 14 years old.
- Backstory: Raja’s parents reported their daughter had gone missing from their home in Karachi. Police said she married Azhar, and “willingly” converted to Islam. According to the Sindh Child Marriage Restraint Act, the minimum age of marriage is 18. At first, the SHC cited Sharia law and ruled in favor of the marriage (i.e. under this interpretation of Sharia law, a child can apparently be married after her first menstrual period). Later on, the SHC ordered police to temporarily place Raja in a shelter home and take Azhar into custody.
- Now what? During previous hearings and yesterday’s hearing, Raja said she wasn’t kidnapped, and willingly married Azhar after converting to Islam. Yesterday, when the court asked Raja if she wanted to go with her parents or to the shelter home, she insisted on going with Azhar and started crying. However, the court noted that she was underage, and doesn’t have the free will to get married on her own. In the end, the court acknowledged that she’s underage, decided to put Raja back in the shelter home, and adjourned the hearing for two weeks.
