1. COVID-19 IN PAKISTAN

24-hour recap: Pakistan reported 3,946 cases and 63 deaths in 24 hours. Pakistan also conducted 38,858 tests in the span of 24 hours (P.S. this data was last updated on March 25 at 8:51am).

PM Khan’s brief isolation period: Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan tested positive for COVID-19 on Saturday, March 20. He has been self isolating at home, and reportedly had mild symptoms. Five days later, Minister for Information, Senator Shibli Faraz, tweeted a photo of PM Khan and his media team having a meeting at his residence. The meeting was indoors and in-person. In the photo, it looks like they’re all wearing masks and sitting at a distance from each other. However, PM Khan was still within the recommended isolation period for COVID-19 patients. That means whoever met him in-person risked being exposed to the virus.

  • A mixed public response: Some people on Twitter are saying, ‘that could have been a Zoom meeting,’ and ‘the optics are all wrong here.’ Others think the meeting participants took enough precaution by wearing masks and practicing social distancing, so it’s okay if the meeting was in-person.
  • How long do you need to isolate if you have COVID-19, but NO symptoms? According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC) people who develop COVID-19, but don’t have symptoms, can discontinue isolation 10 days after the date of their first positive test.
  • How long do you need to isolate if you have COVID-19, but WITH symptoms? According to the CDC, people who develop COVID-19 with mild to moderate symptoms can discontinue isolation after at least 10 days since their symptoms started. People should be fever-free for at least 24 hours without needing fever reducing medication. Other symptoms should also show signs of improvement.

2. One of several child abuse cases

What’s going on? It’s always so hard to write about this kind of news. A four year old girl went missing a day earlier. Her grandfather filed a complaint regarding her disappearance, and prompted the registration of a First Information Report (FIR). Yesterday, her body was found in a drain, in the Khattak Colony area of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP). The police have registered a murder case and are still investigating.

The details: The girl’s family and residents in the area held a protest. They demanded justice. The girl’s family claimed she was sexually assaulted, but a medical report hasn’t confirmed this yet.

The context: During the first eight months of last year, around 182 child sexual abuse cases were registered in KP. As for Pakistan overall, 1,489 children were sexually abused in the first half of 2020. Last year, the National Assembly passed the Zainab Alert, Response, and Recovery Bill, which is supposed to speed up punishments and investigations in child abuse cases.
