2. Maryam Nawaz granted pre-arrest bail
What’s going on? There’s a reason you’ve been seeing Maryam Nawaz’s name pop up a lot on Twitter. Nawaz is the daughter of former Prime Minister (PM), Nawaz Sharif. She is also Vice President of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) opposition party. She has a hearing coming up at the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on March 26. The Lahore High Court (LHC) reportedly granted her pre-arrest bail prior to the hearing. This is also why #LahoreHighCourt is trending on Twitter.
The details: NAB is summoning Nawaz to talk about the Jati Umra Land case and another case involving Chaudhry Sugar Mills. Nawaz and her lawyer requested a bail plea to pre-empt a potential arrest.
Tell me more: NAB accused the Sharif family of illegally acquiring land in Raiwind while Shahbaz Sharif (i.e. Nawaz’s uncle) served as Chief Minister of Punjab in 2013. NAB is also investigating suspicious transactions in connection with Chaudhry Sugar Mills, where Nawaz is supposedly a major shareholder. The Sharif family has been accused of using Chaudhry Sugar Mills for money laundering.
The context: Nawaz is very active in the opposition alliance, which is also referred to as an anti-govt movement, or, the Pakistan Democratic Movement. Her PML-N party is one of the major opposition parties in the alliance.
The bottom line: Nawaz claimed that the cases filed against her are politically motivated. She accused NAB of conducting “revenge politics on the orders of PM Imran Khan.” She believes the govt is feeling threatened by her, which is why NAB is calling her in for questioning.
3. The first Pakistani bank to operate in Beijing
Habib Bank Limited (HBL) became the first Pakistani bank to open a branch and serve clients in China’s capital, Beijing. China is an important market for HBL, and the bank is looking to grow its business in the country. However, this isn’t HBL’s very first branch in China. In 2017, HBL established an operating branch in the city of Urumqi. HBL’s presence in China will reportedly allow the bank to interact with State-Owned Enterprises and financial institutions involved with the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). CPEC is a collection of infrastructure projects that connect China to the Gwadar Port in Pakistan. China has invested a whopping $60 billion in CPEC.
