1. COVID-19 IN PAKISTAN

  • 24-hour count: Pakistan reported 1,786 new cases and 43 deaths in 24 hours. Pakistan also conducted 39,425 tests in the span of 24 hours (P.S. this data was last updated on March 10 at 7:13am).
  • Pakistan Origin Card holders unable to register for vaccine: The govt is launching a COVID-19 vaccination drive for senior citizens today. However, people with Pakistan Origin Cards (POC) are having a hard time registering for the vaccine. POC holders aren’t Pakistani citizens, but have ties to Pakistan either through spouses or relatives (e.g. parents, grandparents). The Computerized National Identity Card (CNIC) is different, because it’s issued to citizens of Pakistan. The Ministry of National Health Services said POC holders are “very much Pakistani” and should be eligible for vaccines. The ministry is going to look into why POC holders haven’t been able to register, while people with CNIC cards are getting approved.
  • Lawmaker gets COVID-19 for the second time: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) lawmaker, Zain Qureshi, tested positive for COVID-19 again. Qureshi said he’s isolating at home. He has some symptoms like a mild fever and headache. He hopes his COVID-19 case is mostly asymptomatic like last time. He also urged people to “take this third wave seriously,” meaning, he is acknowledging the resurgence of COVID-19 cases in Pakistan. Qureshi is the son of Foreign Minister, Shah Mahmood Qureshi.

2. US Congressman mentions Pakistan in podcast episode

What’s going on? US House Intelligence Committee Chairman, Adam Schiff, was a guest on the podcast, Intelligence Matters. Podcast host, Michael Morell, is the former Acting Director of the CIA (i.e. the US intelligence agency). Schiff is a member of the US Congress who represents California’s 28th Congressional district. They covered a lot of ground, but what especially stood out to us was Schiff’s brief comment about Pakistan.

The details: According to Morell, many Americans who supported former Republican President, Donald Trump, now see the intelligence community as a part of the “deep state.” In other words, these Americans don’t trust the intelligence community, and think it’s trying to undermine the US. “Deep state” is a conspiracy theory, which suggests that secret and unauthorized networks are operating behind the scenes of a legitimately elected govt, kind of like a shadow govt.

Tell me more: Schiff said the “deep state myth” is “deeply damaging” and similar to what they used to hear in other Third World countries like…wait for it…Pakistan! He went to Pakistan once, and said there was a conspiracy theory about him being there on a mission to try and change the Pakistan Supreme Court’s judgement regarding former President and Army Chief, General Pervez Musharraf. Schiff recalled thinking “my God, I’m glad we don’t have those kind of crazy conspiracies at home.” A few seconds later he stated, “now we do.”

The context: In December 2019, a special court ruled that Musharraf was guilty of committing high treason for suspending the constitution when he imposed a state of emergency in November 2007. The special court also sentenced him to death. Earlier that year, Pakistan’s Supreme Court said the special court could proceed with the trial and verdict without Musharraf’s statement, since he wasn’t appearing in court. He’s currently living in Dubai.

The bottom line: Many people in a developed first world country like the US also believe in a “deep state.” Trump reportedly pushed the theory of a “deep state” during his presidency. In fact, Trump alleged that several entities were a part of the deep state, such as the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the CIA, military leaders, the media, big tech executives, and even organizations/officials trying to combat the COVID-19 pandemic.

3. Sindh University student found dead

The body of Sindh University student, Irfan Jatoi, was found in Sukkur on Monday. Sukkur police reported that Jatoi was killed in a police encounter on Sunday. Sukkur police spokesperson, Bilal Leghari, alleged that Jatoi was a wanted criminal in several Sindh districts. However, activist and academic, Ammar Ali Jaan, claimed that Jatoi was arrested on February 10 last month, and his dead body was found nearly a month later. Jaan urged the Sindh govt to investigate. According to activist and lawyer, Jibran Nasir, many people on social media are claiming that Jatoi was abducted from Sindh University. Nasir called on the provincial police chief to conduct an inquiry. He also asked Sindh’s Chief Minister to take notice of the incident, since it’s raising a lot of questions.
