1. COVID-19 IN PAKISTAN
2. Pakistanis react to US Capitol breach
What’s going on? Pakistanis did what they do best – post memes (e.g. this, this, this, and this). In related news, a joint session of Congress (i.e. both the House and Senate) resumed late on Wednesday night after supporters of US President Donald Trump barged into Capitol Hill. The joint session formally certified Joe Biden’s presidential election victory. Later on, Trump said, “…I totally disagree with the outcome of the election…nevertheless there will be an orderly transition on January 20th.”
The details: Trump posted a new video yesterday, where he said the demonstrators who infiltrated Capitol Hill “defiled the seat of American democracy.” This is a different tone from his previous video, where he said “I love you” to the rioters while telling them to go home. In the previous video, he also doubled down on his allegations about the election being stolen from him.
Tell me more: Facebook and Twitter took action against Trump. On Wednesday, Twitter locked Trump out of his account for 12 hours after he tweeted baseless allegations about election fraud and voiced support for rioters on Capitol Hill. According to Twitter, Trump violated the company’s rules. Facebook CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, said Trump is trying to undermine the peaceful transfer of power to Biden, which is why the company is blocking his account through the end of his term.
Now what? House Speaker, Nancy Pelosi, called for Vice President (VP) Mike Pence to immediately initiate Trump’s removal from office, even though his term is ending in less than 13 days. She is asking Pence to invoke the 25th Amendment, which is related to the president’s ability to perform the duties of office. It empowers the VP to temporarily become president, in the event that the president can no longer do his or her job. As of yesterday afternoon, DC Metropolitan police said 69 people connected with the Capitol Hill breach have been arrested.
The context: On Wednesday, hundreds of pro-Trump rioters stormed Capitol Hill. Rioters were trying to block the certification of Biden’s election victory. Trump has repeatedly made unproven claims about election fraud. Earlier in the day, Trump urged his supporters to march to the Capitol during the ceremonial confirmation of electoral votes. At least five people are dead as a result of the violence, including a Capitol police officer. Capitol police shot and killed one woman while a massive mob breached the building – she was reportedly an “avid” Trump supporter. The other three had fatal medical emergencies during the unrest. Multiple DC Metropolitan Police officers were also injured.
3. Transgender model attacked in Lahore
Trans model and professional dancer, Rimal Ali, was reportedly attacked and harassed in Lahore. After being abused, her assailant cut her hair, and shaved the rest off. Ali accused someone named Jahanzeb Khan of attacking her. Ali said, “I am being oppressed daily so I can be prevented from working in showbiz.” She also claimed her life is in danger, and that if anything happens to her, Khan should be held responsible. Ali made her film debut in 2018, where she starred in Saat Din Mohabbat In. She has also performed in music videos. Members of Pakistan’s trans community are slowly making their way into mainstream media after dealing with years of discrimination.
4. TikTok’s video competition for Pakistan
Video-sharing app, TikTok, launched its “1 Million Audition” campaign in Pakistan for the first time. This campaign has already been going on since 2018 in other countries. The point is to encourage creative expression. To participate, people can shoot a video based on any popular theme, and publish it on TikTok with the hashtag #1MAuditionPK. The nine best creators in each category will be declared winners (e.g. comedy, talent, song and dance). Winners will be selected based on video quality and engagement. TiKTok will gift vouchers worth $1,000 to the winner in each category. There are also prizes for second and third place. Winners will be announced on January 22.
