1. COVID-19 IN PAKISTAN

  • 24-hour count: Pakistan reported 1,384 new cases and 56 deaths in the past 24 hours. Pakistan also conducted 35,460 tests in the span of 24 hours (P.S. this data was last updated on February 3 at 7:59am).
  • Kicking off COVID-19 vaccinations: Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan witnessed the beginning of Pakistan’s COVID-19 vaccination campaign. The first vaccine shot was given to a doctor in Islamabad. He also thanked China for donating 500,000 SinoPharm vaccines to Pakistan. Health workers treating COVID-19 patients will get vaccinated first, then elderly people who are considered to be in a “high risk age group.” Even though vaccinations in Pakistan have started, PM Khan urged the public to continue following COVID-19 preventive measures.

2. An alleged hit-and-run in Islamabad

The driver of a Lexus car crashed into another vehicle in Islamabad on Monday night. The crash took place at a traffic light. Four men in the other vehicle died, and a motorcycle rider was injured. Federal Ombudsperson, Kashmala Tariq, denied reports about her son driving the Lexus. She also rejected reports about her family members fleeing the scene (P.S. that would be a hit and run). Tariq tried to explain what happened in a video. According to Tariq, she and her husband were in the Lexus being driven by a driver, while her son, a police guard, and a driver were in a black Toyota Fortuner behind them. Tariq told reporters that both her driver and the other vehicle’s driver are at fault, because they sped up while the traffic light was turning red. She also said they stayed at the crash site and called an ambulance.

3. Critics think a new statue of Allama Iqbal is an eye sore

A statue of the late national poet, Allama Iqbal, at Gulshan-e-Iqbal Park in Lahore, kicked up a storm on Twitter. A bunch of people thought the statue was badly made, and an insult to Iqbal. Others said the statue didn’t even look like Iqbal. Mocking memes about the statue made rounds online. However, professional architects or artists did not make the statue. Gardeners at the park made the statue to honor Iqbal. They collected iron rods and wood from around the park to build the statue. They managed to buy some cement after former park director, Ghulam Sibtain, collected funds from elderly people who regularly came to the park. Even though Sibtain said the statue isn’t finished yet, Punjab Chief Minister, Usman Buzdar, ordered the statue of Iqbal to be taken down.
