1. COVID-19 IN PAKISTAN
2. Pakistan listed as “violator of religious freedom”
What’s going on? United States (US) Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, said the US is taking action to defend the right of religious freedom. According to Pompeo’s press statement, the US is designating Burma, China, Eritrea, Iran, Nigeria, North Korea, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan as “Countries of Particular Concern” under the International Religious Freedom Act of 1998.
The details: Yes, Pakistan made it to the list, are you surprised? That means the US is pointing fingers at Pakistan for engaging in or tolerating “systematic, ongoing, egregious violations of religious freedom.”
Tell me more: Pompeo’s press statement didn’t cite examples of how Pakistan is engaging in or tolerating violations of religious freedom. However, the US Commission on International Religious Freedom noted examples of how Pakistan is restricting freedom of religion:
Looking ahead: It’s not clear what action the US is taking beyond designating the mentioned countries.
The bottom line: Pakistan is not happy about this. In fact Pakistan’s Foreign Office (FO) straight up rejected the US designation. The FO is skeptical of how countries were selected in the first place, especially since India isn’t on the list. The FO is wondering why the US overlooked India’s alleged religious freedom violations, especially against its Muslim minority community.
3. Court says fake pilot licenses report likely incorrect
According to the Islamabad High Court (IHC), an earlier report about 262 pilots having fake licences is most likely incorrect. The IHC has doubts about the Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority’s review process for the pilot licences. The IHC’s Chief Justice claimed the fake license report damaged the country’s image. For example, the news triggered a shockwave of international bans on Pakistani airlines, downgraded air safety ratings, and grounded Pakistani pilots in other countries.
4. Claims about opposition alliance’s funding
Earlier this year, an alliance of opposition parties launched an anti-govt campaign. This alliance is called the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM). They are staging protests against the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) govt, and pushing for new elections. Opposition members in PDM believe a rigged election brought Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan and his PTI govt into power. In a recent development, Human Rights Minister, Shireen Mazari, claimed the govt has “information” that people involved in PDM are receiving funding from abroad. However, she didn’t bring up any evidence. She did say the govt would take action once it receives “concrete evidence.”
