1. COVID-19 IN PAKISTAN

  • 24-hour count: Pakistan reported 3,795 new cases and 37 deaths in the past 24 hours. Pakistan also conducted 39,076 tests in the span of 24 hours (P.S. this data was last updated on December 7 at 8:06am).
  • Oxygen shortage at Peshawar hospital: At least six COVID-19 patients died after an oxygen shortage at the second largest hospital in Peshawar. A vendor in Rawalpindi who supplies the hospital with medical oxygen cylinders reportedly didn’t arrive on time. The disrupted oxygen supple affected nearly 200 people, including 96 COVID-19 patients.
  • Inner hall at Faisal Mosque sealed: The capital’s administration sealed the inner hall at Faisal Mosque after COVID-19 prevention guidelines for collective prayers were violated. Now, prayer congregations will be held in the courtyard instead. Govt officials have been urging religious scholars to make sure mosques are following standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • A surge in Sindh: Sindh reported 2,000+ new COVID-19 cases for the first time since July.

2. An interview about religion, ethics and family values

What’s going on? Pakistani actor Hamza Ali Abbasi is taking a break from show business to pursue the true meaning of Islam. He’s also writing a book about God. Even though Abbasi has temporarily taken a step back from acting, he interviewed PM Khan for a private news channel.

The details: They talked about God, western influence, family values, and ethics. PM Khan mentioned America’s “sex, drugs, and rock ‘n roll” counterculture in the 1960s. Coming back to the present, PM Khan claimed this same vulgar culture is slowly seeping into local content and society now. Abbasi claimed the family system in Pakistan is collapsing, because marriages are ending more often.

Tell me more: PM Khan brought up the hit Turkish TV drama, Diriliş: Ertuğrul, as an example of a “religiously inclined show” that is popular. PM Khan is the one who recommended the show to his fellow Pakistanis. He hopes to see more locally made shows like Ertuğrul. 

The bottom line: PM Khan stressed the importance of religion, morals and keeping family values intact. This is a big transition from his past. In a 2019 article, Vanity Fair claimed PM Khan had “a hard-partying life as a cricket star and sex symbol.” The same article called him “an Oxford-educated playboy.” On other occasions, he’s been described as a playboy-turned-Prime Minister. PM Khan is currently married to his spiritual guide, Bushra Maneka. He was previously married to British heiress, Jemima Goldsmith and journalist, Reham Khan.

3. Claims about opposition party leader’s mental health

Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Senator Shibli Faraz, made unverified claims about the mental health of PML-N VP, Maryam Nawaz. Faraz said ‘people have no doubt that she’s confused and has reached an extreme level of depression and frustration.’  He was referring to her recent speech during a PML-N social media convention. Nawaz said the opposition alliance will make big decisions on December 8th regarding PM Khan’s resignation and the removal of his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) govt. She brought up the possibility of mass resignations from legislative assemblies.

  • Backstory: The Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) is an opposition alliance against the govt. PML-N, Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Fazl (JUI-F) are the three largest political parties in the PDM. The opposition alliance is determined to continue protesting, because they want the PTI govt to step down.

4. Virgin Atlantic about to kick-off flights to Pakistan

It’s happening! Starting from December 13, British airline, Virgin Atlantic, will begin passenger flight operations to Islamabad and Lahore. The airline will use an Airbus A-332 aircraft while running weekly flights to both cities – four times a week from London Heathrow to Lahore, three times a week from Heathrow to Islamabad, and four times weekly from Manchester to Islamabad.

5. Celebrating Sindh Cultural Day

On Sunday, men, women and children across Sindh came together to celebrate Sindh Cultural Day. Crowds of people gathered in large open spaces, despite the highly contagious nature of COVID-19. People wore traditional Sindhi attire, such as the Sindhi topi (i.e. cap) or ajrak (i.e. shawl). They also danced to folk music and sang songs to honor Sindhi heritage. Judging from these festive pictures, it doesn’t look like a lot of people were wearing face masks.
