2. PM Khan’s tribute to the late Prince Philip
What’s going on? Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan tweeted a condolence message about the recent passing of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. Prince Philip is the late husband of the UK’s Queen Elizabeth II. They were married for 73 years. He died peacefully in Windsor Castle on Friday morning, April 9, at the age of 99.

The details: Prince Philip recently spent a month in two London hospitals, where he got heart surgery and treatment for an infection. He will be laid to rest on Saturday next week. His funeral will reportedly comply with local COVID-19 restrictions. As of now, only 30 people are allowed to attend funerals in England.
Tell me more: Prince Philip was the UK’s longest serving consort (i.e. the spouse of a ruling monarch). He was reportedly known for his “off the cuff” (i.e. spontaneous, unprepared) remarks, that some people considered “offensive.” He often accompanied the Queen on royal engagements, and made several appearances on his own as well. He also led hundreds of charities, and launched programs that helped British school children participate in outdoor activities.
A little history: Prince Philip was born as a member of the Greek royal family. His father was Prince Andrew, younger brother of the King of Greece. His mother was Princess Alice of Battenberg, a descendant of German princes. His parents fled to France when he was 18 months old. Both Prince Philip and Queen Elizabeth are the great-great-grandchildren of Queen Victoria. Prince Philip served in the Royal Navy during World War II. He married the then-Princess Elizabeth in 1947. Prince Philip began his lifetime of service as a royal consort in 1952, when Princess Elizabeth became Queen after the death of her father, George VI.
The bottom line: Tributes for Prince Philip poured in from all over the world, including Pakistan, India, Australia, Canada, and the US.
