1. COVID-19 IN PAKISTAN

  • 24-hour recap: Pakistan reported 1,683 cases and 24 deaths in 24 hours. Pakistan also conducted 50,531 tests in the span of 24 hours (P.S. this data was last updated on July 8 at 7:21 am).
  • Concerns about a fourth COVID-19 wave: Prime Minister Imran Khan warned the public about a potential “fourth wave” of COVID-19 in Pakistan. The country has reportedly witnessed a sudden rise in daily virus cases. Two days ago, the National Command and Operation Centre confirmed the presence of different COVID-19 variants, including Delta (Indian), Beta (South African), and Alpha (UK). In a video message to the nation, PM Khan said he’s especially concerned about the Delta (Indian) variant escalating in Pakistan. The Delta variant, which was first detected in India, is highly contagious. PM Khan reminded people to wear masks in public places where the virus can spread easily, particularly at restaurants, weddings, and other indoor spaces. He also advised people to get themselves vaccinated.

 

2.  NADRA employees arrested for giving ID cards to militants

What’s going on: During a press conference on Thursday, the Federal Investigation Agency’s Sindh Director, Amir Farooqi, announced that two assistant directors at the National Database Registration Authority (NADRA) and an agent have been arrested on charges of making Computerized National Identity Cards (CNICs) for militants.

The details: The NADRA employees reportedly helped militants get CNICs in exchange for money. Farooqi said these militants are linked with the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), Al-Qaeda in Indian Subcontinent (AQIS), and Baloch sub-nationalist groups. He added that several employees at NADRA Sindh were involved in helping terrorists get CNIC cards. He also revealed that three to four million “fake” CNICs were made around the time of the last general election.
