1. COVID-19 IN PAKISTAN
2. Explosion near Quetta’s Serena Hotel
What’s going on? If this is sounding like a flashback, it’s because we summarized a similar news report a few months ago on April 22, 2021. Back then, there was a bomb blast in the Serena Hotel’s parking lot in Quetta, Balochistan. The venue is known to be a luxury hotel where government officials and visiting dignitaries usually stay. Now, Quetta’s Serena Hotel is in the news again due to reports about another explosion near the hotel.
April 2021: The blast in April ripped through Serena Hotel’s parking lot, killing at least five people and wounding 12. A suicide bomber used a car full of explosives. China’s Ambassador to Pakistan, Nong Rong, was staying at the Serena Hotel, along with other Chinese officials. However, Ambassador Rong was not at the hotel when the blast happened. Foreign Office Spokesperson, Zahid Hafeez Chaudhri, said all Chinese nationals and diplomats were safe. Tehreek-e-Taliban (TTP), also known as the Pakistani Taliban, reportedly claimed responsibility for the attack. Balochistan has an important role in the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, a massive infrastructure project that China is investing in heavily. That’s why Interior Minister, Sheikh Rasheed, believed the people behind the attack were against Pakistan’s development.
August 2021: At least two policemen were killed and 12 others injured (including six civilians) in the blast that took place near Serena Hotel yesterday. The blast reportedly targeted a vehicle carrying 15 policemen. Balochistan government spokesperson Liaquat Shahwani said an improvised explosive device was fitted into a motorcycle. Shahwani referred to the perpetrators as “terrorists” and claimed they want to “disturb Balochistan’s peace and spread fear.” Balochistan’s Chief Minister Jam Jamal Khan condemned the attack.
