1. COVID-19 IN PAKISTAN
- 24-hour recap: Pakistan reported 4,537 cases and 86 deaths in 24 hours. Pakistan also conducted 58,203 tests in the span of 24 hours (P.S. this data was last updated on July 30 at 7:22 am).
- Considering a complete lockdown in Karachi: The number of daily COVID-19 cases is reportedly rising in Pakistan overall (predominantly the Delta variant). The Sindh government has been thinking about enforcing more COVID-19 prevention restrictions, and even a complete lockdown in Karachi. However, Federal Minister for Planning and Development, Asad Umar, didn’t agree with the idea of closing entire cities. Umar is also head of the National Command and Operation Center that is overseeing Pakistan’s pandemic response. He prefers “smart lockdowns,” which means shutting down specific areas that are considered covid hotspots because a complete lockdown could result in major financial losses. Umar claimed that the working class and laborers will have to pay the biggest price of a complete lockdown, so closing down cities is not the solution.
- New vaccination requirements: Federal Minister for Planning and Development, Asad Umar, said that from August 1 onwards, unvaccinated people won’t be allowed to enter government offices, schools, restaurants, and shopping malls. It is unclear how institutions will check whether people have been vaccinated or not. Also, a bunch of people working in specific areas has to get vaccinated by August 31 (students above the age of 18, transport sector workers, public sector employees, law enforcement personnel, hotel staff, wedding hall staff, restaurant staff, shopping mall staff, and bank staff). Teachers have an earlier vaccination deadline of August 1.
