1. COVID-19 IN PAKISTAN
- 24-hour recap: Pakistan reported 735 cases and 23 deaths in 24 hours. Pakistan also conducted 41,133 tests in the span of 24 hours (P.S. this data was last updated on June 29 at 7:01 am).
2.TikTok banned for a third time
What’s going on? It’s easy to lose track of how many times TikTok has been banned in Pakistan. A few months after Pakistan lifted a ban on TikTok, the Sindh High Court ordered the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority to suspend access to the video-sharing app until July 8, when the next hearing for the case is scheduled to take place.
The details: A citizen filed a petition against content on TikTok that he considers “immoral,” “obscene” and “against the teachings of Islam.” Some of this content reportedly promoted “LGBTQ-Pride Month” as well. The Sindh High Court referred to the Peshawar High Court’s recent decision to lift a ban on TikTok, claiming that the app’s administration is not doing enough to respect the law, basic Islamic teachings, and culture in Pakistan despite its constant assurances to moderate uploads.
A brief timeline of the last two TikTok bans:
- On March 11 this year, the Peshawar High Court ordered the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority to impose a temporary ban on TikTok after several citizens filed complaints about videos that were “detrimental to the youth” and against Pakistan’s “norms and values.” The Peshawar High Court lifted the ban a few weeks later after the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority said it discussed these issues with TikTok’s administration. Going forward, the Peshawar High Court ordered the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority to make sure viewers in Pakistan can’t access “unethical and objectionable material” on TikTok.
- The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority temporarily banned TikTok in October 2020 over concerns about the impact of “immoral and indecent” videos on society.
The bottom line: TikTok, owned by China-based ByteDance, has been downloaded nearly 39 million times in Pakistan as of April 2021. The app is reportedly very popular among Pakistani youth, especially in rural areas. Yet, this is the third time in the last two years it is being banned.
3. Suspects involved in Johar Town blast apprehended:
Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar announced on Monday that a “hostile intelligence agency” was involved in Lahore’s Johar Town blast last week, though he didn’t identify this agency that allegedly provided “financial help” to the suspected attackers. Buzdar said the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) identified suspects within 16 hours of the blast. Police reportedly arrested the “whole network” that arranged the car and filled it up with explosive material. The motive behind the blast is still unclear. Police pickets seemed to be the target of the attack. Punjab Inspector General of Police Inam Ghani also speculated that “hostile agencies” are trying to “embarrass” Pakistan. Ghani pointed out that the blast took place during the Financial Action Task Force’s plenary session – the global watchdog discussed Pakistan’s progress in curbing money laundering and terrorist financing.
- Backstory: The incident occurred near the house of convicted terrorist Hafiz Saeed on Wednesday, killing 3 and leaving 24 injured.
4. Charpoy brought into Sindh Assembly to mark ‘funeral of democracy’:
Some opposition members tried to bring a foldable charpoy (i.e. traditional woven bed) into the Sindh Assembly on Monday to symbolize the “funeral of democracy”, causing mild chaos till security stepped in. Opposition members in the provincial assembly, mostly from Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), were disgruntled when Speaker Agha Siraj Durrani told Leader of the Opposition from PTI, Haleem Adil Sheikh, to speak after scheduled matters were discussed, rather than before. Durrani called the charpoy incident an “insult” to the House while Sheikh complained that opposition members were being denied the right to speak in the House. Earlier this month a session of the National Assembly also descended into chaos when lawmakers hurled objects and expletives at each other.
