1. Hamza Shehbaz asks LHC to intervene in the delayed oath-taking ceremony
What’s going on? On Monday, Punjab’s new Chief Minister (CM) Hamza Shehbaz, asked the Lahore High Court (LHC) to tell Senate chairperson, Sadiq Sanjrani, to administer his oath. Shehbaz made this request due to what he called the “unconstitutional, illegal, and unfounded inaction” of President Arif Alvi, and Punjab Governor, Omar Sarfraz Cheema.
The details: A provincial assembly session elected Shehbaz as Punjab’s CM on April 16. However, he is still waiting on taking his oath. This is reportedly the second time he asked the LHC to intervene. According to Dawn, the Punjab governor is questioning the validity of Shehbaz’s election and “refraining” from administering the oath. Alvi has not nominated anyone else to administer the oath either, which the LHC already directed him to do. Shehbaz referred to Alvi’s and Cheema’s “inaction” as “unconstitutional.” He added that their “non-compliance” with the court order and Constitution “rendered them unable to discharge their constitutional obligation.”
2. Pakistan asks IMF to increase and extend loan package:
Pakistan asked the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to extend its loan program and increase its $6 billion loan package by $2 billion. At a news conference in Washington DC, Finance Minister, Miftah Ismail, said the IMF has “largely agreed” to extend the current program for another year. However, the IMF will send a staff-level delegation to Islamabad next month to further discuss the details. In return, Pakistan plans to reduce former Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan’s fuel subsidies (i.e. the previous government was covering some of the cost for fuel). Pakistan will also end the previous government’s business tax amnesty scheme (i.e. a tax relief initiative for non-filers).
3. Police “trace” Dua’s location:
On Monday, April 25, Sindh’s Chief Minister (CM), Murad Ali Shah, said the police have managed to “trace” the location of Dua Zehra. Her family told the police that she was kidnapped on April 16. Some media outlets claimed that Dua had been found in Lahore. The Lahore police denied these reports, and said a search is still underway. On Thursday, the police in Karachi carried out a raid in Sanghar while looking for Dua, and reportedly found another minor girl who was forcibly being kept there. According to The Express Tribune, Lahore’s DIG of operations, Abid Khan, said the police are using a Lahore-based address in a marriage certificate to search for Dua.
