2. Journalist attacked in Islamabad
What’s going on? Pakistani journalist, Asad Ali Toor, was reportedly attacked in Islamabad. According to The Express Tribune, unidentified assailants broke into his house and physically assaulted him.
The details: Journalist, Waseem Abbasi, tweeted that Toor is severely injured and being taken to a hospital. Journalist Amber Rahim Shamsi tweeted some details from Toor’s friends, who claimed that three men forcibly entered his apartment, tied him up, and beat him badly. Journalist Cyril Almeida tweeted another update saying Toor is at the hospital but still waiting to be treated.
The context: Toor has a history of writing negative comments against the state and state institutions on social media. Last year, a Rawalpindi resident named Hafiz Ehtisham filed a complaint against Toor, accusing him of spreading “negative propaganda” and using “derogatory remarks” against govt institutions and the Pakistan army. Rawalpindi police registered a First Information Report (FIR). They charged Toor under Pakistan’s Penal Code and Pakistan’s Electronic Crimes Act. Back then, The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) condemned the registration of an FIR against Toor, and accused the govt of “muzzling freedom of expression.” The charges against Toor included:

The Marvel Cinematic Universe recently dropped its Eternals trailer. Check out Pakistani-American actor, Kumail Nanjiani, in his super hero element. Nanjiani is playing Kingo Sunen. In the comic book series this movie is based on, Kingo is supposed to be one of the most skilled swordsmen on Earth. He spent years studying Samurai in Japan, and became a famous Japanese action star. Marvel is changing up Kingo’s character a bit in the movie.
