1. Islamabad High Court gives orders to retrieve state gifts
What’s going on? The Islamabad High Court (IHC) ordered the cabinet division to recover state gifts from the people who retained them. During the hearing, Justice Mian Gul Hassan said that “every gift given to a head of state or government official belongs to their office, not to the individual,” he said.
2. What are Toshakhana gifts? The word Toshakhana is derived from Persian, which means “treasure house.” Toshakhana is a government-owned department under the Cabinet Division of Pakistan. It’s supposed to keep gifts that members of parliament, ministers, foreign secretaries, the President and the Prime Minister receive.
The details: After former Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan’s ouster through a no-confidence vote, a previous Toshakhana case came up again. Pakistan’s new PM, Shehbaz Sharif, alleged that Khan sold Toshakhana gifts worth Rs. 140 million in Dubai. There were also reports about the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) looking into a necklace from the Toshakhana that was sold to a jeweller in Lahore for Rs. 180 million, while only a “fraction” of the amount was paid to the Toshakhana. A report claimed that former Special Assistant to the PM on Overseas Pakistanis, Zulfi Bukhari, sold the necklace. However, Bukhari denied the allegations.
