2. Mufti Azizur Rehman arrested after evading police following sexual assault charges
The details: The CIA have also arrested Rehman’s sons, Alatafur Rehman and Atiqur Rehman, on charges of threatening the victim for filing a case against their father. Rehman will be brought back to Lahore to be prosecuted and will appear in court in a day or two, CIA Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Hasnain Haider said.
Tell me more: Punjab Inspector General of Police (IGP) Inam Ghani tweeted on Sunday that they had been able to “arrest this criminal.” He said that they’ll interrogate him, conduct a “scientific professional investigation”, prosecute and then get him convicted by the court. “We want our kids protected from these child molesters and keep our society safe for our future,” Ghani’s tweet read.
The context: Police registered a case against Rehman Thursday after a video of him emerged on social media, in which he appears to be sexually assaulting one of his students who studied at Jamia Manzoor-ul-Islamia (a religious school). Rehman is a member of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam—F (JUI-F), a prominent religious party in Pakistan.
Looking ahead: A spokesperson from the Punjab Child Protection and Welfare Bureau contacted the victim — who police suspect is 20 years old — and assured him and his family that justice and legal cooperation will be provided.
The bottom line: The case lodged against Rehman and his sons was with non-compoundable and non-bailable offences and imprisonment of up to seven years, Dawn reported.
