2. The moon-sighting controversy
What’s going on? For those of you who are celebrating, we hope you had a festive and safe Eid. While you must have loved waking up to caffeine and Sheer khurma, former Ruet-e-Hilal Committee (RHC) chairman, Mufti Muneebur Rehman, is not happy about Pakistan celebrating Eid on Thursday, May 13.
Reminder: The Central RHC is a moon-sighting committee in Pakistan that lets people know when it’s Eid. It’s known to follow a traditional method of sighting the moon that religious leaders consider more “authentic” and “Islamic,” as opposed to using scientific or technological methods.
The details: On Wednesday May 12, at around 11:30 pm Pakistan local time, the Central RHC announced that the new moon has been sighted, which means Eid-ul-fitr was going to be the next day on Thursday, May 13. This was a last-minute announcement since it was close to midnight. People throughout the country still weren’t sure if they were observing Eid the next day, or keeping their last Roza (i.e. fast). Eid-ul-fitr marks the end of Ramzan, which means the end of the fasting period. Before the Central RHC’s announcement, people in Pakistan were expecting Eid to be on Friday, May 14.
Tell me more: Mufti Rehman also said he would never let a govt minister attend a Central RHC meeting if he were chairman. Representatives from the Ministry of Science and Technology were reportedly present during the Central RHC’s four hour meeting on Wednesday night. It sounds like Mufti Rehman thinks the govt had something to do with the moon-sighting decision as well.
The bottom line: Mufti Rehman believes the last Roza was wrongly eaten up (no pun intended). He is doubtful about the Central RHC’s moon-sighting decision, and called on Muslims in Pakistan to keep a Qaza Roza (i.e. compensatory fast) to make up for the last Roza they missed because Eid was announced a day earlier than expected.
3. Who we are remembering on Eid
Many of us are celebrating Eid in a safe space with full hearts and bellies. However, several others are suffering while we observe Eid in peace. We are also thinking about them today.
