2. Why is #SanctionPakistan trending on Twitter?
What’s going on? The hashtag #SanctionPakistan has been trending on Twitter, and at first, the reason for this was unclear. However, more details are emerging about what this hashtag is for. As of yesterday, the hashtag had been used more than 730,000 times.
The details: Al Jazeera cited some data from social media insight company, Talkwalker, which showed that at least 37% of these tweets originated in Afghanistan. According to Al Jazeera, #SanctionPakistan shows the dislike many Afghans feel towards Pakistan for its perceived role in Afghanistan. Even Afghan journalists and activists are tweeting this hashtag.
Tell me more: Senior Afghan officials, including Afghan President Ashraf Ghani, have reportedly accused Pakistan of supporting the Afghan Taliban’s latest offensive. The Taliban are gaining ground in Afghanistan at a rapid pace as foreign troops withdraw from the country. So far, the Taliban have seized control of at least nine districts. There is also heavy fighting between the Taliban and Afghan forces.
Pakistan’s response: Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry suggested that Pakistan can’t be blamed for the Afghan military’s inability to hold back the Taliban. He also told the people of Afghanistan and the USA to ask the Afghan leadership where $2 trillion dollars they received went, since that money was supposed to help build the Afghan National Army. Pakistan’s Foreign Office Spokesperson, Zahid Hafeez Chaudhri, claimed that Pakistan wants to see peace in Afghanistan, and helped facilitate important milestones in the Afghan peace process. The Islamabad Policy Research Institute, a think-tank affiliated with the Pakistani government, released research alleging that mostly Indian and Afghan-sponsored accounts artificially pushed the hashtag #SanctionPakistan on August 9 and 10.
