2. Pakistan is following the situation in Afghanistan as Taliban forces retake the country

What’s going on? According to Al Jazeera, Pakistan’s government said it is “closely following” developments in Afghanistan. At this point, the Afghan government has collapsed, Afghanistan’s President Ashraf Ghani has fled the country, and the Afghan Taliban have taken control of the Presidential Palace in Kabul.

The details: Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry spokesman, Zahid Hafeez Chaudhri, said the Pakistani embassy in Kabul is assisting people, such as Pakistanis and Afghan nationals, who need consular help and are trying to coordinate flights out of the country. Pakistan’s Ambassador to Afghanistan, Mansoor Ahmad Khan, tweeted that the Pakistani embassy in Kabul is also facilitating the requests of foreign missions, international organizations and media outlets who want to temporarily relocate their staff to Pakistan. The U.S. sent 5,000 troops to remove their embassy staff and the Afghans (e.g. translators and interpreters) who helped U.S. soldiers and diplomats in Afghanistan. Other countries are also evacuating their nationals, reducing their presence in Afghanistan, or closing their embassies.
