- COVID-19 surge in Islamabad, Rawalpindi amid high vaccination rates: The nation’s capital, Islamabad, and its neighboring city Rawalpindi, have seen a surge in COVID-19 cases during the week of Aug 2 — Aug 8. The infection rate in Islamabad soared to 10.01 percent as 2,794 new cases emerged in a week. On the upside, more than 50 percent of the capital’s population is vaccinated, according to an official from the Ministry of National Health Services, who hopes to achieve herd immunity once 80 percent of the population in Islamabad is fully vaccinated. The positivity ratio in Rawalpindi stands at 18 percent with 1,904 COVID-19 patients.

Minister for Human Rights slams UK government for keeping Pakistan on its red list for travel: Minister of Human Rights, Shireen Mazari, criticized the UK government for keeping Pakistan on its Red List for international travel while moving India to its Amber List, despite India’s “disastrous handling” of the COVID-19 pandemic. The UK government put Pakistan and India on its Red List in April but recently removed India. The UK government claimed that Pakistan didn’t share COVID-19 data on vaccinations and testing. Mazari pushed back saying the UK government didn’t ask Pakistan for any data, which is publicly available and shared with the UK High Commission as well. During a virtual meeting with Pakistani government officials, British lawmakers of Pakistani origin said authorities in Pakistan should have shared COVID-19 data with the UK government and done effective lobbying to get Pakistan taken off the Red List.
