1. COVID-19 IN PAKISTAN

  • Pakistan crosses 22,000 COVID-19 deaths: The COVID-19 death toll crossed 22,000 in Pakistan after 30 new deaths were recorded in the last 24 hours. The positivity rate stands at 2.6 percent, according to the National Command and Operation Centre. In the last 24 hours, Sindh recorded the highest number of cases and deaths. Balochistan, Pakistan-administered Kashmir, Islamabad and Gilgit-Baltistan didn’t report any deaths during this time frame.

2. PM Imran Khan says CIA will ‘absolutely not’ be allowed to use Pakistan for Afghanistan operations

In the same ‘Axios on HBO’ interview with Jonathan Swan where he linked the cause of women’s rape to what they wear, Prime Minister Imran Khan took a hard stance on U.S. counterterrorism in Afghanistan. Swan asked Khan “will you allow the American government to have CIA here in Pakistan to conduct cross-border counterterrorism missions against Al-Qaeda, ISIS or the Taliban?” Khan replied saying “absolutely not.” As U.S. troops pull out of Afghanistan this year, the administration of U.S. President Joe Biden is looking for ways to monitor terrorist networks inside Afghanistan. In his Axios interview, Khan insisted that Pakistan won’t let the CIA use bases on its soil for cross-border counterterrorism missions, even after U.S. forces leave Afghanistan by September 11.

3. Pakistani-American broadcast journalist becomes PBS NewsHour chief correspondent

Pakistani-American broadcast journalist Amna Nawaz was promoted to chief correspondent at PBS NewsHour last week after being the show’s senior national correspondent. Nawaz joined the American public broadcasting network in 2018 and co-moderated PBS NewsHour’s Democratic Primary Debate with Politico in 2019. She was the first Asian American and Muslim American to moderate a presidential debate. Nawaz has worked at NBC and ABC News prior to working with PBS and has won several awards for her international coverage.
