1. COVID-19 IN PAKISTAN
- 24-hour recap: Pakistan reported 1,629 cases and 76 deaths in 24 hours. Pakistan also conducted 52,427 tests in the span of 24 hours (P.S. this data was last updated on June 6 at 11:13 am).
- US sends COVID aid to Pakistan: The administration of US President Joe Biden gave more details on its plan to donate approximately 25 million COVID-19 vaccine doses. Out of that 25 million doses, around 19 million will be distributed through the global COVAX vaccine aid program. The Biden administration will send the remaining doses directly to specific countries. The 19 million doses that will be distributed through COVAX are going to countries in South and Central America, as well as African countries and Asian countries. The selected Asian countries include Pakistan, India, Nepal, and the Philippines. Out of these 19 million doses, 7 million will be sent to Asian countries. The donations will be pulled from a stockpile of Johnson & Johnson, Pfizer and Moderna vaccines.
2. Foreign Minister slams Afghan official for “demeaning remarks”
What’s going on? During what sounded like an emotionally fired up speech, Pakistan’s Foreign Minister, Shah Mahmood Qureshi, responded to a comment that Afghanistan’s National Security Adviser, Hamdullah Mohib, made about Pakistan. Qureshi called on him to “correct his behavior” and “reflect on it.”
The details: According to a Voice of America (VOA) report, Mohib suggested that Pakistan is “a brothel house” while visiting Nangarhar province in Afghanistan last month. During his speech, Mohib apparently repeated his past allegations about Pakistan’s intelligence agency supporting the Taliban in Afghanistan. The context behind the “brothel” comment is still unclear, as in, we’re not sure how or why he brought it up since we haven’t come across a direct quote from Mohib’s speech. However, Pakistani leaders were reportedly outraged.
Tell me more: While responding to Mohib’s remarks about Pakistan, Qureshi said the guy who is supposed to be Afghanistan’s national security advisor will actually become an obstacle in the Afghan peace process and make things worse if he doesn’t keep his behavior in check. Qureshi also claimed that Pakistan has suffered a huge cost, in terms of financials and lives lost, due to terrorism. At this point, he said Pakistan only wants peace and stability in the region.
The context: This diplomatic spat is happening in the background of an ongoing Afghan peace process, which is taking its time. Pakistan reportedly played a role in getting the Afghan Taliban and Afghan govt officials to start negotiating with each other directly after decades of conflict. Any potential rift in bilateral relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan could delay the process even more, since they need to be on good terms.
Something to know: In the past, Pakistan and Afghanistan have blamed each other for militant attacks in their countries. Afghan President, Ashraf Ghani, once called on Pakistani authorities to take “concrete action” against insurgents in Pakistan. Afghan officials have claimed that attacks in Afghanistan originate from militant training centers in Pakistan. The U.S. has also accused Pakistan of giving the Taliban a safe haven. However, Pakistan denies giving sanctuaries to militants. Pakistan also claimed that insurgents in Afghanistan carry out attacks in Pakistani territory.
Looking ahead: Some media reports, while citing unnamed sources, claimed that Pakistan won’t conduct official business with Mohib any more. However, there’s still no confirmation that Pakistan has actually cut off official communication with Mohib.
The bottom line: Pakistan and Afghanistan have a history of trust issues.
3. Pakistan hosts World Environment Day
Pakistan hosted World Environment Day on Saturday, June 5, in partnership with the United Nations Environment Program. This year’s theme was “ecosystem restoration.” The main event took place at the Jinnah Convention Center in Islamabad. Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan inaugurated official activities, which were live streamed around the world. PM Khan said it’s an honor for Pakistan to host World Environment Day. He called on the world to “correct the course.” He also claimed that Pakistan’s contribution to global warming and climate change is “minimal.” He stated that “rich” countries should give funds to countries like Pakistan, which lack the resources and money to address climate issues. Plus, according to PM Khan, these rich developed countries are the ones contributing more to pollution and global warming.
PM Khan also mentioned some eco-friendly initiatives Pakistan is working on, such as:
- Pakistan’s goal to provide 60% clean energy by 2030.
- The govt’s 10 billion tree planting program.
- Efforts to “recharge” Pakistan’s wetlands. The floodwater that is wasted can be used to replenish wetlands and lakes.
- 15 new national parks that can also boost ecotourism.
4. Pakistani athlete headed to the Tokyo Olympics
Pakistan’s national Badminton champion, Mahoor Shahzad, recently announced that she has been selected for the Tokyo Olympics. Shahzad said she is the first Pakistani Badminton player to qualify for the Olympics. This is reportedly also the first time a Pakistani woman has been invited to participate in the Olympics. According to Shahzad’s Twitter bio, she has been Pakistan’s national Badminton Champion for five consecutive years. President of the Pakistan Olympic Association (POA), congratulated Shahzad on making it to the Olympics.
