1. COVID-19 IN PAKISTAN

  • 24-hour count: Pakistan reported 4,767 new cases and 57 deaths in 24 hours. Pakistan also conducted 45,656 tests in the span of 24 hours (P.S. this data was last updated on March 28 at 7:43am).
  • A warning for non-maskers: Lahore Commissioner, retired Captain Muhammad Usman, warned that people who aren’t wearing face masks in public places will be arrested. This order will be enforced from March 28 onwards. Police teams will reportedly patrol the entire city. According to Usman, the third wave of COVID-19 is spreading quickly in Lahore and other parts of Punjab. He said they have no other option but to arrest anyone spotted without a mask. Usman accused people in Lahore of having a “casual attitude” about COVID-19 preventive measures, especially when it comes to wearing masks and practicing social distancing.
  • Weddings banned in COVID-19 hotspots: On Sunday, the National Command and Operation Center (NCOC) decided to ban wedding ceremonies from April 5 onwards in cities and districts where the COVID-19 positivity rate is over 8%. The ban applies to both indoor and outdoor weddings. These new restrictions are meant to contain and prevent the spread of COVID-19. Minister for Planning and Development, Asad Umar, said the NCOC is tightening restrictions since virus cases are continuing to rise and hospitals are filling up at a fast pace. All kinds of indoor and outdoor gatherings are also banned (e.g. social, cultural, political, sports).

2. Pakistani Uber Eats driver killed in DC

Two teenage girls have been charged in the death of a Pakistani Uber Eats driver in Washington D.C. Mohammad Anwar, 66, was killed last week. The girls, who were 13 and 15 years old, allegedly assaulted Anwar with a taser while trying to steal his car in the southeast part of D.C. During the carjacking attempt, the car crashed and flipped over. The victim, identified as Anwar, reportedly landed on the sidewalk and died at a hospital. It’s unclear what exactly happened inside the car before the crash. However, according to a witness, the victim put up a struggle. The teen girls have been charged with felony murder and armed carjacking.

  • Support Anwar’s family: Anwar immigrated from Pakistan in 2014. He was the financial provider for his family. The family set up a GoFundMe page to raise money for funeral costs and loss of income.

3. Attack in Pakistan’s football HQ

On Saturday, there was reportedly an attack in the Pakistan football headquarters. Chairman of the FIFA-appointed Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) Normalization Committee (NC), Haroon Malik, alleged that former PFF President, Syed Ashfaq Hussain Shah, was behind the attack. Malik said a mob barged into his office, restrained him, locked the doors, and told him to hand over the organization’s accounts. A PFF spokesperson also said staff members were harassed and held hostage. This incident led to the cancellation of a national women’s football championship that started earlier this month. The championship’s participants are reportedly “shocked” and “disappointed.”

  • Backstory: Shah became the PFF’s president after Pakistan’s Supreme Court gave instructions to hold an election in 2018. FIFA (i.e. the international governing body of football), and the Asian Football Confederation, refused to recognize Shah because of “third party inference” from the court. In 2019, FIFA installed the NC to build up Pakistan’s football structure and establish a proper administration through transparent elections. Tension has been growing between the group led by Shah and the NC since elections haven’t taken place yet.
