1. COVID-19 IN PAKISTAN

  • 24-hour count: Pakistan reported 3,097 new cases and 46 deaths in the past 24 hours. Pakistan also conducted 41,574 tests in the span of 24 hours (P.S. this data was last updated on January 14 at 8:13am).

2. Human Rights Watch recaps Pakistan’s crackdown on dissent

What’s going on? In its 761-page World Report 2021, Human Rights Watch claimed that Pakistan’s govt intensified its crackdown on the media, political opponents and civil society in 2020. The same report also stated that Pakistan failed to reduce violence against women and minorities.

The details: Human Rights Watch accused Pakistani authorities of harassing and sometimes, prosecuting, human rights defenders and journalists who criticized govt policies. Human Rights Watch alleged that Pakistani authorities used the National Accountability Bureau (i.e. the country’s anti-corruption watchdog) to detain political opponents and critics of the govt.

Tell me more: The report also claimed that violence against Pakistan’s Ahmadi religious community got worse in 2020. At least four Ahmadis were killed due to blasphemy allegations. Human Rights Watch even referred to a joint statement that a group of women journalists released over the summer. The statement condemned social media attacks, death and rape threats against women journalists in Pakistan whose reporting was critical of the govt.

The bottom line: Human Rights Watch is basically trying to say that it is unacceptable to threaten political opponents, activists and journalists who criticize the govt in a democracy – these activities are more common under authoritarian rule.

3. Why is #PakistanShocksIndia trending on Twitter?

The International Cricket Council ran a poll on January 12, asking Twitter to choose among four cricketers who played the best while serving as team captain. The choices were: Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan (i.e. from when he was captain of Pakistan’s cricket team), India’s Virat Kohli, South Africa’s AB de Villiers, and Australia’s Meg Lanning. PM Khan won the poll, emerging as the highest-rated captain (i.e. 47.3%), closely followed by Kohli (i.e. 46.2%). That’s why Pakistan’s Twittersphere is thrilled, and they aren’t holding back on gloating. Pakistani ministers and senators reportedly chimed in as well.

4. Deepening ties with Turkey and Azerbaijan

Pakistan, Turkey and Azerbaijan signed the “Islamabad Declaration,” an agreement to strengthen cooperation in various areas (e.g. politics, trade, economics, security, science, tech, and culture). Foreign ministers from the three countries held a trilateral meeting in Islamabad. They talked about the challenges their countries are facing. Turkey and Azerbaijan reportedly joined Pakistan in speaking out against India’s alleged human rights violations in Kashmir. Turkey and Azerbaijan also reiterated their position on the Kashmir dispute, calling for a peaceful settlement in line with United Nations Security Council resolutions (P.S. Pakistan and India claim Kashmir in full, but only control parts of it).
