1. COVID-19 IN PAKISTAN
- 24-hour count: Pakistan reported 2,482 new cases and 50 deaths in the past 24 hours. Pakistan also conducted 40,509 tests in the span of 24 hours (P.S. this data was last updated on January 7 at 8:40am).
2. PM Khan plans to visit Hazara mourners
PM Khan plans to visit members of the Shiite Hazara community who are staging a sit-in protest in Quetta. The sit-in has gone one for four days in freezing cold weather. PM Khan reportedly wants to express solidarity with the protestors, who said they won’t bury their dead unless he talks to them in person. Protestors accused the Balochistan govt of failing to protect the Hazara community, and want it to resign. The PM’s Special Assistant on Overseas Pakistanis, Zulfi Bukhari, tried talking to the protestors, but some think his approach was “heartless.” In a tweet, PM Khan said, “we are taking steps to prevent such attacks in the future and know our neighbour is instigating this sectarian terrorism.” He didn’t specify who this “neighbor” is though, and his allegations haven’t been confirmed.
