 1. COVID-19 IN PAKISTAN

  • 24-hour count: Pakistan reported 2,963 new cases and 60 deaths in the past 24 hours. Pakistan also conducted 38,092 tests in the span of 24 hours (P.S. this data was last updated on December 9 at 8:30am).
  • What the world is watching: The United Kingdom (UK) is the world’s first country to begin vaccinating its citizens with a fully reviewed and authorized COVID-19 shot. The first British citizen to get the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine was 90-year-old Margaret Keenan. Since the vaccine requires two doses, Keenan and the others who were vaccinated after her will need their second dose in three or four weeks. They are expected to be protected against the virus seven to 10 days after the second dose. However, it’s unclear how long the immunity provided by the vaccine will last.
  • Vaccine fears in Pakistan: Dr. Mohsin Ali is helping lead a mass trial for a Chinese-made COVID-19 vaccine in Pakistan. Phase III trials are underway at a number of hospitals. While speaking to Reuters at Islamabad’s Shifa International Hospital, Dr. Ali described some vaccine-related questions people have been asking lately, such as, “Is this going to take away my reproductive ability?” or “is there any 5G chip in this?” Dr. Ali said he tries to answer these questions logically, but some people still have doubts. According to a Gallup Pakistan poll conducted last month, 37% of Pakistanis would not get a vaccine once one became available.

2. Opposition lawmakers planning mass resignations

What’s going on? During a press conference, Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) Chief, Maulana Fazlur Rehman, claimed that all opposition lawmakers in the provincial and national assemblies will submit their resignations to the heads of their political parties by December 31.

The details: Mass resignations are a part of the opposition-alliance’s anti-govt campaign. Members of the opposition led PDM are pushing for a new round of elections, since they believe a rigged election brought the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) govt into power.

Tell me more: The federal govt’s presumed next steps would be to fill the empty assembly seats. However, the opposition apparently won’t let Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan hold by-polls (i.e. an election to fill a vacancy in a political constituency).

Looking ahead: According to Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader, Rana Sanaullah, mainstream opposition parties like PML-N, Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) had “reached a consensus” about resigning from the National Assembly. However, Sanaullah pointed out that PPP wasn’t sure about lawmakers resigning from both the National Assembly and provincial assemblies. That’s why the first phase of resignations will reportedly begin with the National Assembly. It’s still unclear if PPP is 100% on board with this mass resignation plan.

The bottom line: The resignations suggest a major challenge to the ruling govt’s authority. However, some people are doubtful that opposition lawmakers will actually resign, and risk leaving their seats. In the meantime PM Khan has made it clear that he’s not going to budge.

3. Christian journalist shot in KP

Unidentified gunmen shot and killed a Christian journalist in Dera Ismail Khan. Gunmen on a motorcycle reportedly fired at 37-year-old Qais Javed near his home after midnight, and fled the scene. Police officer Aslam Khan said Javed was shot several times and died while being rushed to the city’s main hospital. Javed used to work as a cameraman at a local TV station. He was working with a local daily newspaper called, Ehadnama, and recently started his own web channel. No one has claimed responsibility yet, and police are still trying to figure out a motive.

MARKET RECAP
