The moon-sighting controversy<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>What\u2019s going on?<\/strong>\u00a0For those of you who are celebrating, we hope you had a festive and safe Eid.\u00a0While you must have loved waking up to caffeine and\u00a0Sheer khurma, former Ruet-e-Hilal Committee (RHC) chairman, Mufti Muneebur Rehman, is not happy about Pakistan celebrating Eid\u00a0on\u00a0Thursday, May 13.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Reminder:\u00a0<\/strong>The Central RHC is a\u00a0moon-sighting committee in Pakistan that lets people know when it&#8217;s Eid. It&#8217;s known to follow a traditional method of sighting the moon that religious leaders consider more &#8220;authentic&#8221; and &#8220;Islamic,&#8221; as opposed to using scientific or technological methods.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>The details:\u00a0<\/strong>On Wednesday May 12, at around 11:30 pm Pakistan local time, the Central RHC announced that the new moon has been sighted, which means Eid-ul-fitr was\u00a0going to be the next day on Thursday, May 13. This was a last-minute announcement since it was close to midnight. People throughout the country still weren&#8217;t sure if they were observing Eid the next day, or keeping their last Roza\u00a0<em>(i.e. fast)<\/em>. Eid-ul-fitr\u00a0marks the end of\u00a0Ramzan, which means\u00a0the end of the fasting period. Before the Central RHC&#8217;s announcement, people in Pakistan were expecting Eid to be on Friday, May 14.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Tell me more:\u00a0<\/strong>Mufti Rehman also said he would never let a govt minister attend a Central\u00a0RHC meeting if he were chairman. Representatives from\u00a0the Ministry of Science and Technology were reportedly present during\u00a0the Central RHC&#8217;s four hour meeting on Wednesday night. It sounds like Mufti Rehman thinks the govt had something to do with the moon-sighting decision as well.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>The bottom line:\u00a0<\/strong>Mufti Rehman believes the last\u00a0<em>Roza<\/em>\u00a0was wrongly\u00a0eaten up (no pun intended). He is doubtful about the Central RHC&#8217;s moon-sighting decision, and called on Muslims in Pakistan to keep a\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/tribune.com.pk\/story\/2299823\/after-moon-controversy-mufti-muneeb-urges-nation-to-observe-qaza-roza\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/newsletter.thenewsrun.com\/t\/j-l-fjrlhdl-iluykthdp-b\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1621132326185000&amp;usg=AFQjCNH75KG9li7YT6fCx1pVKJ-R-BQKlw\">Qaza Roza<\/a>\u200b (i.e.\u00a0<\/em>compensatory fast) to make up for the last\u00a0<em>Roza<\/em>\u00a0they missed because Eid was announced a day earlier than expected.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: #ffff00;\"><strong>3.
